Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

We Are America / Love Has No Labels (John Cena - Ad Council)

Stranger in a Strange Land was transformative for me, when I read it in high school. The world has changed a lot since then, so it's no likely as big a deal now.

Come on, Joan!  You ain't started it YET?  Here, lemme prime the pump just a bit:

Once upon a time there was a Martian named Valentine Michael Smith.

That's the first dozen words, and indeed, the first paragraph.  Where it goes from there ... well, trust me, you won't believe it until you read it.

Thank you Felaine, for your very kind words and your quote:

"Some of the best things in history have been accomplished by people who got 'tired of being pushed around.' "  by Robert A. Heinlein - in several different books.

You and Loren Miller like Robert A. Heinlein and I bought his "Stranger in a strange land" on Loren's recommendation and haven't read it yet. I must clear some time and read it.

I am feeling overwhelmed with gratitude at this time. So lucky to have made it and now past the terrible part of cancer. Life is profoundly good to me.

That is the important thing, Chris, to be with and live with people who are partners on a team. No domination or submission, no violence and no aggression. Being happy with someone you respect is a wonderful thing. I look back on those early years of my life and of my children and I just shudder. Never, in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be part of such a civilized family. The lesson is clear, don't put up with unacceptable behaviors.

The odd part of this, my ten year old daughter put her hands on her hips, said to her dad, "You don't have a right to treat me this way!" She was the one that awakened me to the insanity of our lives. That very month we loaded the car and headed north from Texas to Washington state. Life has been better and healthier from that day forward. No money, our only food was from our garden, no job, no job skills, and we made it. I am, of all women, most grateful that we pulled it off.

I love a family like yours, Joan! Teamspirit, love and cooperation are such wonderful things in a group! I've always been sorry that we never managed to enlarge our team, but the two of us make a very good team.
