I argued with my doctor last week. He recommended I start statins because my cholesterol total was high for the second year in a row: 264. I maintained my HDL was high (79) and triglycerides wer good (80). Yes, LDL was high (140). Heart was good and strong. We disagreed as to whether my numbers warranted taking drugs. I say no and cited statistics. He, of course, didn't agree. We compromised. I'll be taking red yeast rice to see if it helps. I'm not convinced the doctor knows best.

With a 5k run five weeks away, I need to make a decision whether to participate or not. Am I being "old and foolish"? So this morning I jogged a bit, alternating walking and running every 50 yards or so, 5 miles total. Felt good, but near the end, my hips and groin began to ache. Anyway, I have a week to save $5 entry fee ($20). Doing the race gives me some motivation. Besides, I really do like to run--even at age 73.

I just read that squat exercises are very good for leg strength and balance. I should have been doing them before hiking up and down mountains in Greece last week! I'm adding them to my routine.

Your alternate sugarless days sounds like  doable strategy, Randall. Bravo for taking care of yourself. Of course I'm sugarless every day, being diabetic.

I am repeating last year's "New Year's resolution" and going "sugar free" every other day (usually odd days). No chocolate, cookies, desserts, etc. I lasted 3 months a year ago, then went on a cruise and fell off the wagon. I hope to total 180 sugarless days this year. And on my "sugar-on" days, I'll try not to make up for the previous off day. I've discovered that's hard to do. I've found I over-indulge by rationalization. Wish me luck.

And that is only after you've been alarmed by the stickers. I feel in general food can't really be trusted. Of course consumer organizations would start to protest and talk about their important work - but still. And we have to eat something. I'm rather content with my return to unprocessed simple food.
