Ok, so Guillermo Del Toro is asking for advice by Lovecraft scholars, and the script is being rewritten - so there's hope left that he will render an authentic version of the original story. Although I quite can't believe that the studio will green-light a really pure Lovecraftian point of view in terms of religious context.

Del Toro interviewed about "At the Mountains of Madness"

He takes it very seriously, it will be his most important movie. I'm really curious how it will turn out.

James Cameron about the current status:

"We're very, very actively pre-producing the film right now with Universal. The design work is phenomenal, both the three-dimensional and two-dimensional design work, the physical maquettes, the CG test scenes; the artwork is phenomenal. The fans certainly won't want for a visual feast with this film. But there's [still] a bunch of number-crunching and "How you gonna do it?" and "How you gonna make it?"; "Where you gonna do it?" All that stuff."

I never saw Avatar, and didn't want to, either.

Great article about Guillermo Del Toro with information about "At the Mountains of Madness":
