Lonely in a crowd

I hate crowds and I am so lonely in and out of crowds.

During the holidays, I am the loneliest for the past three years.

I am a 45 year-old divorced father of two and grandfather of one (so far). At the beginning of December, I sent an email to my kids asking if they could set aside a couple of hours to watch and…Continue

I have been thinking a lot about my position in life as an atheist.  Each of us have our own idea of what we are as an atheist but I am generally speaking as a person who was born into a world that…Continue

Is there anyone in the London Ontario Canada area who would like to meet for friendship and casual companionship? I am finding it more and more alienating being the only atheist I know. Kathy

Put this up on Facebook and Twitter (in a shorter version) and I thought it was appropriate for this group as well...

Please allow me to rant and vent here a little bit:

I'm sure everyone knows what tomorrow is, right? Single Awareness Day.

I know, I know, everyone thinks it's Valentine's Day. But for those who don't have anyone in their life (or has NEVER had anyone in their life, such as yours truly), it's one of the most painful days of the year.

Hallmark holiday and all that, yeah, but when you see all the feature stories in the news, couples having a great time and even bachelorette parties on the Landing the Loop or Soulard, it makes me feel totally inadequate, rejected and alone, especially here in St. Louis. It totally sucks being alone.

OK, rant over. Thank you for letting me vent.

"It's having a dozen things to do and a hand full of little goals but ignoring them all because it all seems a waste of time when there's no one to share things with"

poetry to my eyes.

I saw the question up above, "what is lonely?"  Lonely is sitting at my desk in the morning in the quiet of an empty house wishing for nothing more than for a friend to share a conversation and a point of view.  It's having a dozen things to do and a hand full of little goals but ignoring them all because it all seems a waste of time when there's no one to share things with.  It's having a loving family but still knowing you are insignificant in their lives.  And it's knowing in your gut that nothing will ever change and this is all there ever will be. That is lonely.

Unfortunately seperation of church & state is disappearing and it pisses me off ! If someone asks you what you do for the holidays just say " I get drunk and eat too much just like everyone else !

Thank you for the welcome.  Let me tell you about my day today.  I teach, so we had a gift give away at school.  Since it was given by my principal I didn't refuse to go.  We did not have to give a gift, it was like a game.  We chose a gift off of the table and the others had an option of stealing the present or pick one off of the table.  This part did not bother me to much.  Here is the kicker.  One of the co-workers who knows that I am atheist asks me in front of the group "how do you celebrate the Christmas holiday?"  So I replied I go to my mothers house, who lives in the woods, and I go hunting.  So, where is the separation of church and state?

Welcome newcomers ! Zen, I too only know a few Atheists/Agnostics. Stewart, you have more patience than I do, because I can no longer even read any of these religious things without getting completely frustrated or angry. I have tried to read many things, but I find myself getting completely bored, sad, angry, annoyed or just wanting to say "WTF" I cannot for the life of me understand how any sane person can believe this bullshit. I feel like I'm living on a strange planet all the time.
