I recently decreased my time at Atheist Nexus to participate in the Media Ecology Association. This scholarly group seemed closer to my interests than any other, and I've been academically isolated far too long.
Yesterday I began by reading two papers from their 2010 convention that sounded interesting. That quickly the honeymoon was over.
Chet Bowers' plenary address The Challenge of Making a Transition from Individual Intelligence t... appalled me. As professor emeritus, former professor at Portland State, he appears to hold significant prestige. His solution to coping with climate destabilization is to idealize indigenous peoples cultures, including throwing out reason and critical thinking. I guess he never heard of Easter Island. Still I shudder. Were humanity to go back to indigenous ways of life Earth could only support a few hundred thousand. I see this as having lost ones way.
