Press Release

Public invited to Regional Atheist Picnic
Atheists hold Contest to benefit Homeless Shelter

Mansfield, OH, July 2, 2012: Mid Ohio Atheists (MOA) has announced they are sponsoring a Regional Atheist Picnic which will be held on July 15th at the Mohican State Park near Loudonville. MOA president Ron Stephens said the event will be held at the picnic area by the covered bridge at 11:00 AM. Members of the public are welcome and encouraged to come out and meet area atheists.

MOA asks the public to remember that while the public is encouraged to attend and meet their members, this is not the setting for arguments or debates. The picnic is intended as a family event for atheists, freethinkers, and nonbelievers, and a chance for local religious leaders and believers to come out and see that nonbelievers are not much different than believers.

The picnic will include a contest to benefit Harmony House, a homeless shelter in Mansfield. The contest will be judged on who brings the most toilet paper, trash bags, and paper towels for donation to Harmony House. These items are the ones most people don’t think to donate but are some of the things that are greatly needed. Prizes will be awarded for first and second place.
Secular Student Alliance campus organizer JT Eberhard, who is well known in the atheist and freethinker community as a blogger, speaker, and debater, will be speaking to attendees about community building and networking for nonbelievers. There will also be several activities for children and adults, including corn hole, volleyball and ladder ball.

Members of many surrounding groups such as the Cleveland Freethinkers, Cleveland Skeptics, Great Lakes Atheists, Recovering from Religion Toledo Chapter, and Humanist Community of Central Ohio will be in attendance at the picnic.

Mid Ohio Atheists is actively building an atheist community in the Mansfield area by having social activities for members. Pub nights and movie nights are regularly scheduled events, a Mohican River canoe adventure is being planned for August, and a trip to the Creation Museum will be in September.

Mid Ohio Atheists, a local group of atheists in the Mansfield area, is very proud to announce a cooperative effort between Mid Ohio Atheists and American Atheists, the preeminent national organization for atheists.  Together, our two organizations will erect 3 billboards in and around Mansfield Ohio.  The billboards are scheduled to be displayed starting the week of November 28th, 2011 and will run through the holiday season.

Mid Ohio Atheists President Ron Stephens said, “Our billboard campaign consists of three billboards which will be going up in the Mansfield area.  The first one will be a slightly modified version of American Atheists’ holiday billboard which they will display at the Lincoln Tunnel in New York City and is expected to garner national attention.  Our version of the billboard will be located on U.S. Rt. 42 between Lexington and Mansfield.

“The second billboard is directed toward atheists in the Mid-Ohio area to let them know that they are not alone in their disbelief.  This billboard will be located at the corner of 4th St. and Trimble Rd.

“The third billboard will be a reply to the McElroy Road Church of Christ’s billboards from several months ago that created a media stir with their ‘There is no God. Don’t believe everything you hear.’ billboards.   We hope that the McElroy Church of Christ will support us, as we did them, in the promotion of skeptical inquiry.  This billboard will be located on Park Ave. West, near Grasmere Ave.

“We wish to thank David Silverman, the President of American Atheists, for showing confidence in our group by becoming partners in this endeavor."

We are now involved in the State of Ohio's Adopt-a-Highway program.  We have been signed up since last September but the road signs were just erected and we completed our first litter pickup on April 30th.
