Hey Bob. The Joplin Freethinkers are actually meeting tonight with a church group. I will let you know how it goes. this is our first one, so pray for us.

Hi all. I'm a member of the St. Joseph Skeptics. We are presently thinking about offering to hold discussion sessions with local church groups. We'd like to speak first with some people who have done this so we are prepared for pitfalls. Anyone willing to give us suggestions?
Thanks -- Bob

Just a little response for KCFree
Isn't it odd that all the disasters sighted by JT are occurring in the more religiously virulent south and mid-west? That's not to say there aren't a sizable portion of critical thinkers there. Just adding some fodder, if you will.

I will definitely be attending Skepticon 2, it should be a blast. I'd like to try to get together with as many old friends and new friends as I can. :)

Thanks Greg, I will run it by the group.

Hey are you coming to Springfield for Skepticon2? Might be a fun chance for us all to hob nob.

Hi Jonathan,

Group affiliation with American Atheists is free and there are no obligations. It is more of a declaration of friendship then anything.

Some benefits include:

-Affiliate listing on the American Atheists website
-Announcements of local events when possible.
-Assistance in arranging on-going programs.
-The oppurtunity to take part in the affiliate meeting at the American Atheists annual convention.

And more can be found at:

Affiliation provides Affiliates the chance to work with and help American Atheists and vice versa. Groups are under no obligation to agree with everything American Atheists does.

Are there any benefits/costs for a local group being affiliated with the American Atheists?

It's important for Atheists to be free, responsible, autonomous. I hope that we are all involved in the movement doing what we can and what we enjoy (with others of course if that's how we choose to be active).

My plan is to encourage others and myself. I want it to be easy and safe for any person of any age and background anywhere to be able to stand up and say "I don't buy this supernatural stuff." I want to see more and more of us become more vocal about our Atheism and about keeping superstition out of our lives. I want to see us communicate with our Atheist neighbors and with Atheists from all over the state, the nation, and the world.

There are a lot of individuals and a lot of groups doing a lot of great things right here in Missouri and in the midwest. I will lend my support however I can to worthy activities by others and carry on the struggle for a better situation for everyone.

I will back Randy up here and say that the Joplin Freethinkers are a great bunch of people.
