You're right, Spud, it is a sad song, especially the lines

And now, my friend, we're older but no wiser

For in our hearts our dreams are still the same.

The song is almost magical, because it somehow made me feel way back in 1968 a lot how I feel now.

Those Were The Days.  It's a nice tune that I've listened to many times, but it's the saddest song I've ever heard.
