"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." -- Carl Sagan

"What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence." -- Christopher Hitchens

What is a logical fallacy? All arguments have the same basic structure: A therefore B. They begin with one or more premises (A), which is a fact or assumption upon which the argument is based. They then apply a logical principle (therefore) to arrive at a conclusion (B). An example of a logical principle is that of equivalence. For example, if you begin with the premises that A=B and B=C, you can apply the logical principle of equivalence to conclude that A=C. A logical fallacy is a false or incorrect logical principle. An argument that is based upon a logical fallacy is therefore not valid. It is important to note that if the logic of an argument is valid then the conclusion must also be valid, which means that if the premises are all true then the conclusion must also be true. Valid logic applied to one or more false premises, however, leads to an invalid argument. Also, if an argument is not valid the conclusion may, by chance, still be true. For a more thorough discussion of logical fallacies and how to structure a logical argument, see the New England Skeptical Society's article, How To Argue.

"No skeptic, to my knowledge, ever made a major scientific discovery or advanced the welfare of others."

-- Deepak Chopra (yes, he actually said that)

"The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds the most discoveries, is not "Eureka!" (I found it!) but That's funny..." -Isaac Asimov

The scientific world view is full of awe and wonder. Understanding how truly awesome the universe is – in its elegant complexity, its staggering beauty, and the many intricate systems of which it is comprised – gives a profound feeling of connectedness and sparks the imagination. And it has the advantage of being real. -Steven Novella

The glory which is built upon a lie soon becomes a most unpleasant incumbrance. How easy it is to make people believe a lie, and how hard it is to undo that work again.
— Mark Twain

I used to work for a state legislature. I know how it works. You're right. This will most likely never pass, and if it did it would never survive the courts. For now. (That could change with more court appointments coming straight out of Heritage Foundation.)

That's not the point. Can't a boy marvel at the sheer shitheadedness of elected leaders in this age of endarkenment?

Bert, the sky is not falling, DAMMIT!
Phone the office of your state senator or representative and ask for three averages:
— how many bills are introduced in a legislative session,
— how many survive their hearings in committee, and
— how many become law.
Yes, legislators introduce some really CRAZY-SEEMING bills.
They are ALL sent to committees for examination.
Few are heard in committee, and MOST DIE IN COMMITTEE.

WTF??

Missouri Bill Would Restrict Marriage To People Of Faith

JANUARY 25, 2018 BY MICHAEL STONE

  • Non-religious need not apply: A new bill in Missouri would redefine any marriage that take place outside of a church as a “domestic union.”
  • House Bill 1424, introduced by State Rep. T.J. Berry, a Republican lawmaker and ordained church deacon, would essentially restrict all marriage to people of faith by redefining any marriage not solemnized inside a church as a “domestic union.”

Cognitive dissonance must be what allows Republicans/Trump to claim Mueller somehow broke a law by legally subpoenaing thousands of emails detailing their transition team’s connections to Russian/ KGB assets whilst simultaneously giving themselves a pass on their own use of illegally hacked opposition emails provided to them at Donald Trump’s public request.

Good point about white evangelicals new strategy to rpretend they're more moral than everybody else. It's "only a problem so long as that moral test is what people are talking about and thinking about. So talk about something else." It's like the 24/7 news cycle capturing everyone's attention, making us forget what happened yesterday. Thanks Bertold.

Just ran into a good short read on the history of abortion politics--

This is what abortion politics is for
Fred Clark

. . . That legal battle lasted from 1971 until it was lost, conclusively, in 1983, with the Supreme Court’s ruling in Bob Jones University v. United States.

But by then it didn’t matter, because by 1983, white evangelicals had found a new strategy to reclaim their rightful place as the standard-bearers of morality. That strategy was simply this: Change the subject.

Failing the clearest moral test of your time and culture is only a problem so long as that moral test is what people are talking about and thinking about. So talk about something else.

. . . And it worked. It worked so remarkably well that within another decade or so, the disgraced moral pariahs who had so thoroughly shamed themselves by failing the great moral test of the Civil Rights movement had been rebranded as “values voters” — the repository and safeguard of our national morality.

Lama Smith says geoengineering is worth exploring.

CO2-FACED

In a joint subcommittee hearing held on Wednesday, House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chair Lamar Smith said the technology “could have positive effects on the Earth’s atmosphere” and “reduce global temperatures or pull excess greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.”

BUT, climate change is not to be "debated" or discussed.

“The purpose of this hearing is to discuss the viability of geoengineering … The hearing is not a platform to further the debate about climate change.”
