"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." -- Carl Sagan

"What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence." -- Christopher Hitchens

What is a logical fallacy? All arguments have the same basic structure: A therefore B. They begin with one or more premises (A), which is a fact or assumption upon which the argument is based. They then apply a logical principle (therefore) to arrive at a conclusion (B). An example of a logical principle is that of equivalence. For example, if you begin with the premises that A=B and B=C, you can apply the logical principle of equivalence to conclude that A=C. A logical fallacy is a false or incorrect logical principle. An argument that is based upon a logical fallacy is therefore not valid. It is important to note that if the logic of an argument is valid then the conclusion must also be valid, which means that if the premises are all true then the conclusion must also be true. Valid logic applied to one or more false premises, however, leads to an invalid argument. Also, if an argument is not valid the conclusion may, by chance, still be true. For a more thorough discussion of logical fallacies and how to structure a logical argument, see the New England Skeptical Society's article, How To Argue.

"No skeptic, to my knowledge, ever made a major scientific discovery or advanced the welfare of others."

-- Deepak Chopra (yes, he actually said that)

"The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds the most discoveries, is not "Eureka!" (I found it!) but That's funny..." -Isaac Asimov

The scientific world view is full of awe and wonder. Understanding how truly awesome the universe is – in its elegant complexity, its staggering beauty, and the many intricate systems of which it is comprised – gives a profound feeling of connectedness and sparks the imagination. And it has the advantage of being real. -Steven Novella

The glory which is built upon a lie soon becomes a most unpleasant incumbrance. How easy it is to make people believe a lie, and how hard it is to undo that work again.
— Mark Twain

A WTF? political moment--

OKLAHOMA: New GOP Gov And Wife Announce Mission To Use Office To “Bring People To Jesus”

Kyle Mantyla reports at Right Wing Watch:

Newly elected Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma attended an “Inaugural Prayer Service” today, during which he declared that it is his mission to align the state “with what God is doing in Oklahoma,” while his wife proclaimed that it is their responsibility “to go our into our state and save people and bring people to” Jesus.

Good news about Greece. And I like the list very much!

#7 and #4 of those "top ten signs you're a fundamentalist Christian" remind me of the Holy Quran Experiment, where people disguised a Christian Bible as a Quran and read shocking verses to people... who were quite shocked when it was revealed that those inhumane and barbaric pronouncements came from the scripture respected in their culture.

(There are some related videos, including "The Holy Quran Experiment in New York City", but here's the first one I saw.)

Top Ten Signs You’re a Fundamentalist Christian
10 – You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.
9 – You feel insulted and “dehumanized” when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.
8 – You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.
7 – Your face turns purple when you hear of the “atrocities” attributed to Allah, but you don’t even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in “Exodus” and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in “Joshua” including women, children, and trees!
6 – You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.
5 – You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.
4 – You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs — though excluding those in all rival sects – will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most “tolerant” and “loving.”
3 – While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in “tongues” may be all the evidence you need to “prove” Christianity.
2 – You define 0.01% as a “high success rate” when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.
1 – You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history – but still call yourself a Christian. -From Evil Bible.com

Long past time for big changes.

Patricia, anyone with even a reasonable degree of empathy can get what it means to be attacked or theatened, whether sexually or otherwise.  For myself, I know of at least two such people in my own life who have experienced such attacks, and I am enraged that it happened to them, because of their place in my life.

The thing is, I find that I would be enraged at any such action anyway, because of the utter presumption taken by those who do such things, that they are somehow entitled to access to another person's body, regardless of consent.  And I can't help but note that this is at least in part the product of the biblical attitude that treats women as chattel and men as blameless in matters of sexual usury.  Yet another reason to evict religious "morals" from human society.

It is Michael, but I also figure the more we speak up & spread these things around, maybe somebody will begin to take note.

Patricia, I agree with your permitted post on  rape from your friend except that old white men in politics will never get this at all unless it comes home to roost at their own front door. In todays Trumpian World the blame will then be put on someone else. The message sent to the koolaid drinkers right now is to tell your sons that some woman is waiting somewhere to ruin them. Apparently there is no message for the daughters except to obey men. How sad.
