@Rich Lawrence: you wrote: "There are some very nasty theists around Winston and the surrounding areas." I couldn't have said it better myself & glad I'm not the only one aware of it. It's a struggle to keep from becoming bitter & I mulst remind myself that some of them are in my own family. A large part of western NC is the same w/ the exception of Asheville (a wonderful aberration of NC). Even Boone w/ AppState as a relatively lrg (~20,000 students), & seemingly diverse university is more religious than the average 'university town'. But it's growing fast so there's hope for it to be a 'little Asheville' yet!

I will keep the picnic in mind. I def need to get out of this place more often!

@Hemlock: I would love to escape this county on a wknd or two (even if only to Wilkes Co.) but I have commitments that keep me from doing it. Thanks for the invite!

@Joseph P: Thank you for putting my cowardice in perspective for me. I do feel guilty at times for not speaking up & for tolerating things like the principal at our HS handing out bibles to ea graduate; but you're right, those things are a risk for me right now. One day, when the girls are 'free of me' :) & my very-Christian mother has gone to her 'heaven', then I can be out & proud, regardless of the city in which I live!

There are some very nasty theists around Winston and the surrounding areas. I am of the same mind as Darwin when in a situation such as this:

"I am a strong advocate for free thought on all subjects, yet it appears to me (whether rightly or wrongly) that direct arguments against Christianity & theism produce hardly any effect on the public; & freedom of thought is best promoted by the gradual illumination of mens' minds, which follow[s] from the advance of science."

Hardly. One of the ways that Atheists are better is being rational and thinking things through. When you have something at risk by being out and loud, just bolster our numbers with your census and let others be the vocal ones.

I sound like an cowardly atheist but I have to think of my daughters. I'll not sacrifice their well-being to evil christians for so I can gain my 'street cred' as an atheist. We're not dealing w/ rational folks here! Our very rural area is 50-60 yrs in the past, space is big but sparsely populated. Our town has a pop. of only about 1400. News gets around fast.

Ah, yeah, I forgot Wake Forest was a Baptist university. That's funny as hell, when it's stuck right on the side of Greensboro.

Hi again all...Robert, in answer to your question: Winston is probably the least liberal city in NC. It's home to Wake Forest University (lg private Baptist univ) & their huge Baptist Medical Center! The progressives are there but you won't know it. I know of a young lady who whose car was keyed & an angry note left about her atheist/liberal bumper sticker. Daughter wanted an Obama4Pres sticker for our car then, but I said no way, it's an invitation for all kinds of trouble. If it got out around the school, teachers or the busybodies around town, it would be miserable them.

We only go to Winston for the mall, possible entertainment, and medical stuff, our docs are there.

well, i don't thinkg my big dog is very cat friendly. even though hes usually such a big puss. lol.

plus, we have a hard enough time with the little one always trying to find new ways to escape. much less our cat roaming the neighborhood. would make me nervous as hell. we have enough trouble and expenses dealing with the two lil furmongers we already have, anyway.
