There is one group that may be just a few miles closer, in Gastonia:

Gastonia Freethinkers

You'd have to join Meet-up to communicate with them.

Also, if anyone else is looking for a group in NC, or surrounding states, I try to keep an up-to-date list on our website WNC Atheists.
Just navigate to "Social" in the toolbox on the left, and go from there.

Also, if anyone knows about any groups that I've missed, or bad links, please let me know.

Hi Everyone,
I've been in NC for 35 years. I joined Atheist Nexus about a year ago, but the only atheist I found was a relative of my ex-husband back in PA. and didn't know anyone else to invite, including many of my family. I am so frustrated that people still believe such silly crap.

I am retired, very opinionated and becoming less and less tolerant of very conservative religious people who stick to their beliefs, customs and traditions, bigotry and choose not to change with the times. Who listen to anyone that appeals to them without thinking for themselves or bothering to find the truth, but they'll keep repeating it to others and then they believe it too.

Maybe I need to find a specific NC atheist, progressive liberal group who loves Stephen Colbert.
I live about 35 miles Northwest of Charlotte. I was hoping there would be meetups closer than Charlotte. I don't go to there unless I absolutely have to.

The best thing to do when they start getting in your face harassmentishly is to laugh: laugh loud, long, and hard. Openly enjoy how stupid their presuppositions are and tell them such. If all they can get out of you is a laugh that hurts their ears, eventually they will quit.

Wow, sound like I did when I first moved here and I didn't even know I was an atheist yet! Yes, the South is full of ignorant and narrow-minded people, but I've lived in PA, and there are plenty of them there too. They're easier to deal with if you just shake your head and walk away. I don't argue and I don't debate. Both are futile and a waste of energy. The main reason theists are afraid of atheism is because they know at some level religion is a fairy tale, but it's the only thing giving their life meaning. It's easier to have a god than stand on their own two feet. It's all fear. Don't be mad at them...feel sorry for them.

It's on Anyone nearby or far away (if you like to drive) fom Elizabeth City is welcome. This is my first attempt at starting a group so if you're interested and nearby go to meetup and look up Elizzabeth City Freethinkers.
Thank you.

I apologize if this was the wrong place to post this.

I know this is the "Bible Belt", but.....I honestly would not mind people believing in the 'unknown' (key word) and the possibility of a god/afterlife/etc as much if people weren't deluded enough to not only take it as a fact sans any semblance of evidence, but claim to know what this being wants. Then have the nerve to judge "non-believers" (as even many 'liberal' Christians or 'cool' ones give you the cold shoulder once they find out you're atheist). I mean, despite always doing great in tests and classes, I am FAR from some intellectual elitist. In fact, I often feel like I'm an undereducated slacker and a bit slow compared to many other 'atheists', but to me, it just honestly doesn't even take much intellect to start questioning how fucked up a lot of the Bible crap we're preached to is (understatement). It just boggles my mind that reasonable and actually intelligent people still believe such insane and hateful crap........i mean if I were a father and set my kid on fire for sticking his hand in a cookie jar, they'd call me a monster, and I'd be spat on, not the opposite: being looked up to as a pillar of morality just punishing his child. But it's OK for 'God' (?) to do this.....without end (?).

Sorry......just rambling.

I know how you feel Larry, I usually feel like me and my brother are the only atheists in Wilson.
