Maybe it's because I live in the fictionalized town of Mayberry, boyhood home of Andy Griffith, that people here are all "god & country"
It fits in with their idea of small town American values. We have 88 churches in this town but not one natural food store, not even a Whole Foods. Our first week here one of our neighbors made it a point to bring his pastor by night after night trying to bring us "the word of god" He was relentless until I asked him if he was working on commission. He hasn't spoken to us since but we refer to him fondly as the soul collector. After him was the unending line of church ladies, all determined to get past the front door. None of them succeeded, and as I grew increasingly less polite word seemed to get around and they have dwindled to no more than 1 or 2 a month. But still there is the inevitable question when I meet someone new and it is a questioned often posed to my husband by his high school students at the start of a new semester. As an impolite question deserves an impolite response, we have both learned to simply answer "it is none of your business". .

I'm surprised when I look at the fact that there are several churches in my tiny town and the fact that I've not been asked "What church do you go to?" or such ever that I can recall. Maybe it's just secretly full of the religionless, considering how many atheists I was aware of in high school.

If asked what church I attend, I answer "Landover Baptist."

Wow! NC atheists, who knew?? I am currently residing in the oppressive little town of Mt Airy. We moved down here from the Capital Beltway area a couple of years ago. Until I got here I never felt isolated by my lack of faith, but then the 1st question everyone asks here is "what church do you go to?"

Hello everyone. I'm here in Winston; just wondering if any atheists exist nearby.

Are there other atheist bikers in NC?

Hi Toni, always good to hear from a fan! :=) Suzanna, who started our group about five years ago, just put an ad on meetup. She didn't know a soul, had just moved to Wilmington. If you know another potential member, you're way ahead of the game. Two of our members just started a group in their hometown of Myrtle Beach. So far two of us have gone there as speakers. I would be happy to help however I can, and there are others here who would help as well. If you have the time and the inclination, go for it!

Take care!

Hello! I'm in Greenville. Perhaps stuck in Greenville is more like it. Originally from Central Illinois. I've met Pete before...he was manning the booth at the Azalea Festival! Hi Pete! Just as FYI, I'm 40ish pushing 50 (but 50 keeps pushing back). Let's see...straight but not narrow, single but not available, and a mom but not motherly. And yes, I like to cut up. :) Let me know if we need a meet-up in this area. I'll be glad to get it started!
