I teach in a Gaston County public school and we have had a Bible class for years. It was taught by a language arts teacher for a few years, but most recently by a history teacher. What is disturbing is that they always pick the most Christian member of the staff to teach the class. I wish they'd give me a crack at it. I think the kids would definitely learn some interesting things about the Bible then.

Here is an article from the ACLU concerning the offering of Bible classes in public school. The course offered in Kannapolis is an elective course (I could not tell if it was a required elective or not). The issue with a bible class is whether the class is promoting a certain interpretation of the bible. IMO, it would be nearly impossible to have an entire class devoted to the bible without the teacher doing some interpretation. The only way it would seem to be legal is if the teacher is presenting it as Bible as Literature, in which case wouldn't you just need a licensed language arts teacher and not a bible teacher? Either way, should tax dollars be spent teaching a particular holy book without teaching all the others? Wouldn't the tax dollars be better spent on a science/math/GT/special ed teacher? That is what would make me angriest if I was a taxpaying citizen in Kannapolis.

Liz posted this on the Charlotte Atheists site. I just wanted to pass it on to others throughout North Carolina. If you live in Kannapolis, or nearby this should cause more concern.

This is a listing for a Licensed Bible Teacher at Kannapolis Intermediate School. From what I understand this is a public school. I have called to ask about the position, but have not been able to contact anyone as of now. I also understand that the school teaches 5th and 6th graders. I hate to jump to conclusions, but it sounds like a good old case of indoctrination. I also sent an email to the NC Board of Education and the Governor asking why we need such a position in a public school.

Here's the link to the job posting:

I was born in Scotland spent my formative years (2-16) in Australia then moved back to Scotland. Met and married an NC lass and moved here about a year and half ago. I've never been anything other than an atheist thanks in no small part to my Dad who refused to have my brother or I exposed to any religious indoctrination. Not that he did or said anything to guide us either way that I can recall, he simply left it to our own choice.
I admit that I had some trepidation in moving to the tail end of the bible belt but I am glad to have found that there are in fact quite a few atheists agnostics and couldn't care lessists around.

I was born and spent most of my life in NC. Now I live in Virginia just a few miles north of the Virginia Carolina border.

Ya know Alex- I cannot remember (Crumwiddy sounds familiar). This was around 2003. He was openly sexist. When it came time to write the critiques on him, it took all the women in the class about 45 minutes to write.

Judd- saw you on the Charlotte site- glad you joined. I joined the NY Atheist group here in case I move back home. You really should come to one of the social dinners- the restaurant has great food and wonderful beer on tap. And, you sit with a bunch of people that have control of thier minds!!!

My turn, my turn. I'm from western NY (I have spent some time in Ithaca), and moved to Lexington, NC about 5 years ago. Just found this site about 2 days ago. I haven't met any natives of north carolina that aren't christian, but luckily I have a few friends back home in NY that are atheist, and my mom is as well. I hoping to meet some like minded people here and maybe do one of these meet ups (although Charlotte is about 75 miles away).

I had the mayor(?) of Abbeville as my economics teacher at Piedmont tech- he is such a loser!!! Greenwood and I did not get along. I was there for 7 years (97-2004), worked at Goodrich and K-mart, and my ex was a greenwood city cop, now I guess he is a greenwood deputy. He is another loser. Glad to see your leaving that place soon- the Asheville area is much nicer and there is not a church on every corner! Ashville is one of those college towns with great micro-brewery beers and pizza!! Kind of like Ithaca, Boulder, and Athens.

Guess it is my turn!!!
I live in Monroe and am a member of the Charlotte Atheist group. Please check out our website and it you can attend one of the social meeting- do it!!! great food and great people!! Since the ecomony has nailed me in the pocketbook, I don't get to go- but do it if you can!!!

I am originally from Syracuse NY-then Denver CO, Norfolk VA, Colts Neck NJ, and then Greenwood SC. I have no family in this part of the country so you all are my local family. I was raised a Catholic but always knew something was wrong with it. I am NOT a militant Atheist, I beleive some people need that crutch to keep them in line.
I enjoy meeting people and a good conversation-especially one that does not ask me what church I go to. And, I am usually up for a chat if I am online!!!

Well, I will be moving to N.C. My son will be attending the North Carolina University School of Fine Arts. I'm very active in atheism. Born and raised in the DC area. Graduated from Univ. Of S.C. Lived in S.C for about twenty years. Have lived in the Md. suburbs since 1988. Currently looking for a residence in NC. Will be moving around late August. This is an inquiry as well as an introduction.
