Philosophy Club

What: Philosophy Discussion Group

When: 1st Saturday (usually) of each month, from 2pm – 5pm
(3 hours, including a break)

Where: Natural Grocers' meeting room to the right as you enter.

How: Readings discussed in-depth amongst the group. No tests, no lecture… we help teach each other in a spirit of learning.

TOPIC Philosophy of Religion

“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." - Aristotle

The above quote is a good starting point to understanding the goals of analytic philosophy. As a contemporary philosopher once said, “Philosophical analysis amounts to locating the presuppositions, implications, and logical structure of sets of ideas.”

It is in this context we will continue our discussion on the philosophy of religion, focusing the month on The Problem of Evil.

The textbook we are using is to be found here:

https://www.amazon.co...

The name of the book is:

Exploring Philosophy of Religion: An Introductory Anthology 2nd Edition

ISBN-13: 978-0190461386

 Readings TBA

Here is site where you can click on the Table of Contents tab to see what papers we will be reading:

https://global.oup.co...

Expectations

Readings are not required, but we ask that you please stay on topic during the discussion.

We are teaching each other in a "spirit of learning": we should be humble (we do not know everything), eager to learn, and willing to challenge each other while being kind and considerate.

There will be people of various backgrounds in philosophy — you do not need to be an expert in philosophy to be in the group. If a topic is new to you, here are some good resources, if you are interested:
- Wikipedia
- Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
- Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
- The Oxford Companion to Philosophy
