Human Ancestors Lived Through European Winters for 600,000 Years Without Controlled Fire and Neanderthal Controlled It 400,000 Years Ago

A new study conducted by scientists at Leiden University in the Netherlands and the University of Colorado Museum in Boulder indicates that human ancestors survived European winters for 600,000 years without the controlled use of fire, and that Neanderthal controlled it 400,000 years ago. There is evidence of the controlled use of fire 780,000 years ago at one site in the Middle East. There is evidence of the use of fire in Africa 1.6 million years ago but scientists speculate it to have been from collected (as from lightning strikes) rather than controlled (hominid ignited) origins. The findings have been published in the March 14th issue of the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
