Scientists have determined that human ancestors (probably Homo erectus) used controlled fire a million years ago in a cave in South Africa. This predates by 300,000 years the previous evidence of controlled fire by human ancestors. It is not known whether the fire was ignited by the ancestors or was the result of hot embers having been brought into the cave that had been naturally ignited. Under any circumstances the fire appears to have been intentionally utilized in the cave. It reveals a social aspect of the ancestors that had previously not been known.  The findings have been published in the April 2, 2012 edition of the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
