An Italian magazine named Panorama has issued a press release to the effect that the U.S. National Security Agency, NSA, eavesdropped on Catholic cardinals and possibly Pope Benedict from December, 2012 to January, 2013. According to the magazine the eavesdropping might have continued up until the conclave that elected Pope Francis. The source of the story is  a website named Cryptome which is supposed to provide information on surveillance. NSA has denied that the story it is true.  Per the article:

At the time the calls in the Vatican were monitored, Benedict XVI was Pope, suggesting that the Vatican may also have been monitored during the last few weeks of his papacy. The allegations follow a report on Cryptome, a website that gathers intelligence on surveillance, which claimed that the US intercepted 46 million telephone calls in Italy between December 10 last year and January 8 this year. The monitoring of Vatican communications, including emails, continued after Benedict's resignation in February and encompassed the election of Pope Francis.

Strangely, I don't have as much of a problem with this as I do with the spying on other nations.  The Vatican is a criminal nation that has operatives functioning within our borders, breaking our laws.  A little counter-spying is fair game there.

I certainly don't have a problem with it. The pope and cardinals are old enough to know that their actions constitute a serious disservice to humanity. Spying on them might lead to more discrediting of them and, thereby, more disempowerment of them.

The sad thing is there is not much info to gather unless they were able to find more info about child molestation or all the money being funneled in and not much coming out to help its own

Well ... I got the world's tiniest violin and it's playing JUST FOR THEM...
