According to a recent and extensive Pew survey the percentage of Americans who consider themselves to be Christian has decreased significantly since 2007 while the percentage who consider themselves to be Atheist, agnostic or "nothing in particular" has increased significantly. Per the article:

....But the major new survey of more than 35,000 Americans by the Pew Research Center finds that the percentage of adults (ages 18 and older) who describe themselves as Christians has dropped by nearly eight percentage points in just seven years, from 78.4% in an equally massive Pew Research survey in 2007 to 70.6% in 2014. Over the same period, the percentage of Americans who are religiously unaffiliated – describing themselves as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular” – has jumped more than six points, from 16.1% to 22.8%....

According to the survey the number of agnostics has increased about 67% (from 2.4% to 4.0%) while the number of Atheists has increased about 94% (from 1.6% to 3.1%).

There's a long way to go John but it looks a healthy trend. At this rate it should be even Stephen in under twenty years.

As you said at least things are going in the right direction. Hopefully they will go that way at an exponential rate but, as you said, we will probably have to wait a long time for Atheists and agnostics to constitute anything near a majority.

... the number of agnostics has increased about 67 % from 2.4% to 4.0% while the number of Atheists has increased about 94% from 1.6% to 3.1%.

Also significant: the "nones" are getting more secular. The proportion of religiously unaffiliated Americans who say religion is "very" or "somewhat" important in their lives has dropped by 6 percentage points -- balanced by a commensurate gain in those who identify as atheist or agnostic. (The proportion of "nones" who identify as "nothing in particular" and to whom religion is unimportant has stayed stable.)

Good point.

Can't come soon enough. Hopefully before the evangelicals completely hijack the US political system and Constitution and establish a Theocracy.

Lets hope that's a joke.
