Pantheism- Naturalistic Spirituality

Pantheism- Naturalistic Spirituality

A religion old or new, that stressed the magnificence of the universe as revealed by modern science, might be able to draw forth reserves of reverence and awe hardly tapped by the conventional faiths. Sooner or later, such a religion will emerge.

Welcome to the group Maria. It's easy to be repelled by religion when one looks at its track record, but I think one of the biggest problems with religion historically has been the propagation of nonsense and supernaturalism. As Voltaire wisely said, "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." An honest religion— one free of gods and spirits and other supernatural absurdities could be therapeutic by addressing our need for shared meaning, fellowship and coordinated activity. As Tom Clark says, Nature is enough."

I must say, I'm quite intrigued by the quote in the group description.

My own perspective resonates with much of the doctrine (if I may use the term) of pantheism, but I have a life-long aversion to the "theism" contained in its name. For that reason I have tended to avoid pantheism. The term I prefer is "religious naturalism" which constitutes pretty much the same thing. Nature is not my GOD, but rather the highest category of my conceptual world and the source of all my hopes and fears. The truth is not only stranger than fiction, but more terrible and wonderful as well.
