I have seen and heard too much to think that religion is a benign enterprise. Working in battered women's shelters and with abused children, I know how and why parents who follow religious values use these principles in ways that harm children. Many people grow into adulthood infected with a virus of religious origin and some never find relief. It is all so unnecessary! There are unhealthy and healthy ways to raise children and treat spouses. Following the preacher's lectern pronouncements and listening to bible teachers lessons can do real harm and can be anything but loving, caring, or compassionate.
