Politics, Economics, and Religion

Religion has so many connections to political and economic beliefs, there needs to be a place to identify linkages, problems, goals, options, action plans and evaluation criteria.

What is the purpose of life?

An eternal question, what is the purpose of life?, occupied philosophers’ thoughts throughout history. Stone pictographs reveal even primitive peoples reflected on this query. Each one has the capacity to define his or her personal thinking about politics, economics and religion.

Ruth, I agree with the assessment about Oprah;  I haven't watched her for years for that reason.

"for three decades she has had a major role in encouraging Americans to abandon reason and science in favor of the wishful and imaginary."

Years ago I watch Oprah (my sister loves watching her....) and  I felt  Oprah was selling Saks Fifth Avenue version of pseudo-psychology....and I enjoyed reading Kurt Andersen article...thanks!

Ruth Kurt Andersen is one of my heroes. I think that Slate article is excerpted from his fabulous book Fantasyland - How America Went Haywire. That book should be required reading for every high school senior.

I'm confused....

Today, Prez Trump signed a proclamation honoring Martin Luther King Day, gave a short speech (vomit) , then came Ben Carson speech (ass kissing vomit), and some other preacher speech (couldn't watch it)

Didn't Congress approved the MLK Day bill signed into federal holiday by Ronald Reagan in 1983 to which came into effect in Jan. 20, 1986?

Or was this another ass wipe face saving Trump tactic for endorsing his concept of "shithole" African countries?

"If you do not want to stop the wheels of progress; if you do not want to go back to the Dark Ages; if you do not want to live again under tyranny, then you must guard your liberty, and you must not let the church get control of your government. If you do, you will lose the greatest legacy ever bequeathed to the human race—intellectual freedom."

Having not watched Oprah Winfrey, I didn't know this.

... Perhaps more than any other single American, she is responsible for giving national platforms and legitimacy to all sorts of magical thinking, from pseudoscientific to purely mystical, fantasies about extraterrestrials, paranormal experience, satanic cults, and more. The various fantasies she has promoted on all her media platforms—her daily TV show with its 12 million devoted viewers, her magazine, her website, her cable channel—aren’t as dangerous as Donald Trump’s mainstreaming of false conspiracy theories, but for three decades she has had a major role in encouraging Americans to abandon reason and science in favor of the wishful and imaginary.

I read Naomi Klein's No Is Not Enough recently. Excellent book.

  • A near-impenetrable sense of impunity—of being above the usual rules and laws—is a defining feature of this administration. Anyone who presents a threat to that impunity is summarily fired . . . Up to now in US politics there’s been a mask on the corporate states White House proxies: the smiling actor’s face of Ronald Reagan or the faux cowboy persona of George W. Bush (with Dick Cheney/Halliburton scowling in the background). Now the mask is gone. And no one is even bothering to pretend otherwise.

She writes with crystal clarity and well-informed, impassioned articulateness.

Chris, I agree, read and listen to Naomi Klein. She makes more sense than some of the people who represent us in government.

By the way, I enjoy and appreciate the videos you recommended to me. The Goddess one was just outstanding.

The problemss in Puerto Rico aaren't much different than the problems than Louisana with Hurricane Katrina.

Perhaps Puerto Ricans should condider themselfs lucky that mercenaries wereen't sent in to kill them to prevent looting as happened with Hurricane Katriana.

Perhaps some should read some of Naomi Klein's books and writings to understand how it works.

GWB killed and privitized it.

Joan, your “We don't need to name-call, accuse, or blame...and speak with confidence,” says it well.

We have much to celebrate.
