Politics, Economics, and Religion

Religion has so many connections to political and economic beliefs, there needs to be a place to identify linkages, problems, goals, options, action plans and evaluation criteria.

What is the purpose of life?

An eternal question, what is the purpose of life?, occupied philosophers’ thoughts throughout history. Stone pictographs reveal even primitive peoples reflected on this query. Each one has the capacity to define his or her personal thinking about politics, economics and religion.

Biden sounds like Trump Lite.Biden went from voting for the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 to defending gay rights in 2012. He supported the invasion in Iraq, then called it a mistake. He initially (in 1973) said he believed Roe v. Wade was wrongly…Continue

Donald, I can count on you to defend the status quo.

Do you know the ways America’s first billionaires became wealthy?

They did it the same ways it’s being done now: lawlessly or by being bailed out of their economic recessions or depressions by taxpayers.

America has always had socialism for wealthy folks and competitive free enterprise for others.

When in history was it not so?

There are a lot of rich people who do a lot of good for the rest of us.  Bill and Melinda Gates have poured millions into bringing computers into libraries.  There are many hospitals with wings that have the names of the donors who paid for them.  There are countless museums and libraries that exist because the rich donated the funds to build them.  There are assholes at every level, but I think we benefit because of the rich.

Many may not remember movies from the 1930's about the guilded age.

It would be interesting to produce a move about the modern guilded age.  People may be disgusted to see how the top 2500 richest people in the U.S. live - let alone the richest peopl in other contries live and behave.

Trump is the kind of president his cheering and laughing crowds want and need, and the kind of president the rest of us have.

The Aspiring Autocrat President* Is Making Moves

He made trouble down in the Florida Panhandle and started shoving the free press out the door of the White House.

“You have hundreds and hundreds of people and you have two or three border security people that are brave and great — And don't forget, we don't let them and we can't let them use weapons. We can't. Other countries do. We can't. I would never do that. But how do you stop these people?"

~ Trump

“shoot them.”

~ a rally attendee in the crowd shouted

“That’s only in the panhandle, can you get away with that statement."

~ Trump said instead of condemning the remark

The crowd erupted in cheers and laughter — after another brief pause,

“Only in the panhandle.”

~ Trump repeated

Does this sound like the kind of President of the United States we want and need?

Quote from William Rivers Pitt:

Like Trump himself, American capitalism is largely about grand theft, smoke and mirrors, and screwing over most everyone whose bank balance doesn’t have nine zeroes to the left of the decimal. Virtually none of it is real, and yet it squats over the landscape like some noisome toad, seemingly inescapable, all the while creating profitable strife and lucrative disorder.

Joan, thinking about the god of Graham and Pence and Sanders that your quote cited, I have to throw in the following:

You know your god is man-made when he hates all the same people you do.

Seems like EVERYONE is running for the Democratic nomination. (Bernie 2020 campaign headquarters, with Sanders on the phone next to a board with polling results showing Biden, Sanders, Warren, Harris, Buttigieg, Beto, Booker, Capt. Millionaire & his wife 'etc., etc., etc.'; an aide tells him, 'Guess what?' Headline on the TV overhead, showing 'LIVE' news: TRUMP TO ALSO RUN AS A DEMOCRAT.)

@Chris, the Vicky Ward interview was like watching a bad movie of the rich and famous, making me sick at heart that our nation, represented by these unsavory creatures, even exist. If a movie is made of this crowd, I will be looking somewhere else.

Bertold, I like the Pavlovitz essay and add this quote:

"People deserve a God who is bigger than Franklin Graham’s God and Mike Pence’s God and Sarah Huckabee’s God. Their God is small and terrified—and it suspiciously resembles them.

”People deserve a God who so loves the world, not a God who believes in America First; whose creation begin without divides and borders and walls, because there is only a single, interdependent community.”

~ John Pavlovitz
