They bring in nationally known speakers (Austin Dacey, Lawrence Krauss, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris), are starting up a critical thinking course, potlucks, picnics, camping events, volunteer work, humanist film festival. They participate in local atheist activism, and sponsor several atheist meetups in the Portland area. Over 150 local events per year! Come join the community - exciting things are happening!

United States Atheists
I have not attended one of their meetings yet, but there is a group called "United States Atheists" that has their headquarters on SE Foster. I am thinking about checking them out soon. They have meetings on Tuesday nights at 7:30.

Portland Area Humanism Meetup
The Humanists of Greater Portland (HGP) are reaching out! We have been meeting downtown every Sunday morning for a decade, for questions, discussion, and socializing, all anchored to an interesting program. Everyone is welcome to attend those meetings, and we get some attendees traveling 25 miles each way, but they don't work for everyone.

Secular Parents of Greater Portland
This is a meetup for parents who are raising their children without religion, who love reason as well as art, and who are looking for a community where they can find fun, support, and great company for themselves and their children.

The Beaverton Atheists Meetup Group
Meet local atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, scientific naturalists and other friends of reason for conversation and friendship! We often meet on Portland's West side but welcome people from anywhere.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster Lands for a Pint
Meet other local atheists, freethinkers and heathens. Gather to discuss beliefs and philosophies, and make new friends.
Causal, open conversation at various pubs and events!

Secular Humanists of East Portland
They meet every two weeks in SE Portland. The typical format is watching science or religion related movies at one of the members' houses with discussion afterwords. Potlucks quarterly and some outdoor activities planned this summer.

Vancouver Skeptics Meetup
The newest Atheist group near Portland. They plan to meet once per month for drinks, food, and conversation at a local restaurant.

For other groups local to Portland, you can look here for a gathering near you: "Groups pertaining to 'atheist' within 25 miles of downtown Portland."

I'm doing one last push for my book before moving on to other projects. If you don't have a copy yet and would like one, please check out to get a good deal and some extra freebies. It's my first experiment on kickstarter so I'd also appreciate you sharing the page if you can!

An innovative treatise into religious history, comparative mythology, astrological symbolism and contemporary culture.

B Good. There is the Humanist Association of Salem:
Also CFI Eugene... sort of near Salem:
Plus, many like minded folks in Oregonians for Science and Reason which I think often has events in Salem:

CFI Portland (who technically represents the entire NW), is looking for someone in Salem to meet a couple times a year with our Representatives.... As a face of the atheist community and its concerns. Contact me if that is something that interests you.

Is Salem not considered part of Oregon? I just moved here from Alaska, and I see Portland area groups and South Oregon groups, but nothing in the middle. If Salem is a foreign place because it's the capital, I understand. Alaskans feel the same way about Juneau.

Go to, there are always things to do. I've only made it to one get together myself but that is only because my wife is considers herself a Christian, so the whole idea of a comunity of nonbelievers is a bit dicey at times. Thanks for helping us stay the most atheistic state in the country :o)
