Sojourners, a progressive Christian organization, is soliciting signatures for "A Prayer and Pledge for Real Change"
. The campaign is asking Obama to make particular efforts to overcome poverty, find better ways than war to resolve conflict, promote a consistent ethic of life (including reducing abortion), and reverse the effects of climate change. Unfortunately, the pledge is framed in specifically religious language and only believers are invited to sign.
Fair enough, I guess; they're a religious group, and I can see the benefit of trying to counter the Religious Right with a progressive agenda that's explicitly religious. Still, it's too bad that we nonbelievers who share this consistent-life-ethic perspective are left out. Over on my blog, I've been asking people to write in to change.gov and then share their letters with the rest of us to inspire more progressive pro-life people to take action.
