“Preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” - Carl Sagan
The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance. ― Carl Sagan
Seems to me I should probably start reading this Charles Pierce character. He appears to have a better than average handle on things, which these days is in short supply.
The only conclusion I can draw from recent events is that the Fox News Channel was even more of a sewer backstage than it is on the air . . .
We have a choice. We have two options as human beings. We have a choice between conversation and war. That's it. Conversation and violence. And faith is a conversation stopper.― Sam HarrisI thought this made a rather powerful statement ... but then, I LIKE Sam Harris.
"Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.
~ Native American Proverb
"If this earth should ever be destroyed, it will be by desire, by the lust of pleasure and self-gratification."
~ Lame Deer
“The reason people use a crucifix against vampires is because vampires are allergic to bullshit.”― Richard PryorFunny thing – I'm pretty sure I have the same allergy! And Gary, you're talking to a BIG fan of Dan Rather!
Loren and Daniel, I like those quotes.
Here is also a Dan Rather one that I like:
"The world is a better place when we have an open exchange of ideas."
I agree - it has an ecstatic, pantheistic ring. Reminds me somewhat of this one:
Quero hacer contigo lo que la primavera hace con los cerezos.
[I want to do to you what spring does to the cherry trees.]
