Now I like Gwyneth Paltrow not only for her looks, but also for her thoughts. I didn't know Blythe Danner (who also is beautiful) is her mother.

The elightenment peiod is interesting and contunues with atheism.

It amuses me about the saying that the world is flat.

Boys and girls should be taught respect for each other's liberty; they should be made to feel that nothing gives one human being rights over another...

Loren, that Hitchens comment is important. The RCC is miraculously adept at skating on its barbarous history as it hypocritically lays claim to being the true source of morality.

An interesting corollary to Dunning-Kruger: atheists who kick religion easily say others with fewer smarts or prospects should kick it.

Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse.
― Christopher Hitchens

It has been observed many times that religion is benign and tolerant and interested in minority rights when it itself is in the minority, without power or influence.  Once in the majority and empowered to act, minority rights and in particular the right to free speech and dissent go out the window.  Islam is an especial offender in this regard, and all you have to do is look at Saudi Arabia or Pakistan for examples.
