I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

I am unable to believe in a God susceptible to prayer. I simply haven't the nerve to imagine a being, a force, a cause which keeps the planets revolving in their orbits, and then suddenly stops in order to give me a bicycle with three speeds.
― Quentin Crisp

Me, either, Quentin.

Hugely anomalous and destructive weather events are going to be the new normal in no small part because a hugely anomalous and destructive political event took place last November. Some day, that whole election may be looked on as a crime against humanity.

I try to deny myself any illusions or delusions, and I think that this perhaps entitles me to try and deny the same to others, at least as long as they refuse to keep their fantasies to themselves.
― Christopher Hitchens

Sadly, some of those people are so enamored of their fantasies that they just CAN'T keep their mouths shut!

The bible and the church have been the greatest stumbling block in the way of women's emancipation.
― Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Christopher Hitchens said repeatedly that the one reliable technique for ending poverty was, and I quote: "The empowerment of women," a concept which the church has been as utterly opposed to as they have been women's emancipation, mostly because they amount to the same thing.

Thanks, Daniel, for the Gaiman quote. I modified it to match my experience.

God is a metaphor,

a dream, a hope, a father, a watchmaker,

a celestial being intending to love you, even if you don’t give any reason to be loved;

god is a supernatural being with the power to make you prosper, your marriage thrive,  your team, army, political party, and business win.

Religion is an idea upon which to stand and see, think, and act. It is a perspective point from which to perceive the world.

Modified and thanks to

~ Neil Gaiman, American Gods.

It's fascinating that H.R. McMaster and Dina Powell and Rex Tillerson, these very impressive people, all came out and denied that the president gave the Russians secret intelligence in the Oval Office. But, then, the next morning the president was like, "Yeah, I did tell the Russians!" So that's a sign to not get too hung up on what the White House is saying at any moment, because even their most credible people are being put forward to lie, bluntly, regularly . . . and it's OK!

I don’t know [why we're here]. People sometimes say to me, ‘Why don’t you admit that the humming bird, the butterfly, the Bird of Paradise are proof of the wonderful things produced by Creation?’ And I always say, well, when you say that, you’ve also got to think of a little boy sitting on a river bank, like here, in West Africa, that’s got a little worm, a living organism, in his eye and boring through the eyeball and is slowly turning him blind. The Creator God that you believe in, presumably, also made that little worm. Now I personally find that difficult to accommodate…

R Thomas, as it comes to that, well-behaved ANYBODY, men or women, don't make history. It's the people that rock the boat that make it happen!
