Great quotes from Ingersoll!  He was a giant.  Questions: If he was so powerful, why hasn't his influence been more lasting?  Why isn't Ingersoll Day nationally recognized? Did any of his followers spread the word?  Or have atheists and skeptics been marginalized, like homosexuals?  And: with all the televangelists and other charlatans raking in big bucks...how come no atheist TV networks?

And were people more tolerant then? Today, I fear, Ingersoll would be picketed, vilified, and cyber-stalked.

Here 's another:

"Those who love God are not always the friends of their fellow-men."

Our new favorite dino has been compared in size to the space shuttle. That is like, the coolest thing ever. Imagine how long it took Jesus to make a saddle to fit that mofo.

Thanks, Cat.  Writing "if only" speeches is a form of therapy sometimes.

Alan's talent wasn't so hidden... I was especially impressed by "Speechwriting for the Pope", his fantasy farewell speech for Pope Benedict's retirement, which I've shared and quoted.

Freedom is always the freedom of dissenters.
-- Rosa Luxemburg

This is a lesson we seem to have to teach over and over again, whether we're talking about women, blacks, the LGBTQ community or us – atheists.  When the majority have so dominated the conversation that minority positions have been lost in the noise, they need to be reminded that there are other opinions in the air, and that the tyranny of the majority is still a thing.

I was a speechwriter for a couple of years too. (Post-Watergate days, 23 Ds and 7 Rs in the state senate.) I've always been fond of a catchy quote.

I've been a speechwriter for 25+ years -- I love quotes.

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.

Joan, thanks for the Ingersoll day and quotes. This one that you posted, really speaks to me: "I do not believe in forgiveness as it is preached by the church. We do not need the forgiveness of God, but of each other and of ourselves. – Robert G. Ingersoll

Yes Alan, just post something that you find meaningful or compelling or inspiring or thought provoking, in the comments. It's been a running series, and I love seeing what people find worthwhile sharing.
