Quotation Of The Day

A place to post quotations that inspired you, made your day better, or made you pause and think.

I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

"I think it wiser not to open the sores of war, but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife and to commit to oblivion the feelings it engendered."

Robert E. Lee, on not building Confederate monuments

Put all the Confederate stuff in museums and not out in public, where it can piss people off.  There's a good reason why Germany is not festooned with memorabilia of the Third Reich.  Memory and history are enough. Maybe if the Union had followed Lee's advice -- obliterated every trace of the illegitimate nation and its vile doctrines -- in 1865, we'd be looking at a very different 2017.

If Jesus had been an actual historical figure we have a thorny paradox. Either this Jesus was a remarkable individual who said and did a host of amazing, revolutionary things – but no one outside his fringe cult noticed for over a century. Or he didn’t – and yet shortly after his death, tiny communities of worshipers that cannot agree about the most basic facts of his life spring up, scattered all across the empire. The truth is inescapable: there simply could never have been a historical Jesus.

There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.
-- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Short, pointed, and utterly correct, Herr Goethe, never mind highly applicable in the here and now.

I have a simple philosophy: Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches.

- Alice Roosevelt Longworth

I've read that she supposedly lost her faith when she was 15. I still wish I could have done it as quick as her.

Joan...yes, but with evidence.  When language becomes unhinged from reality (as with most religious blather), then things become true by virtue of repetition. Goebbels knew that - knew that most people were too lazy or docile to look for evidence - and this opens the door to all mnaner of linguistic mischief.

Joan, thank you for your comment and quote.  I agree, and I do.

Alan & Daniel, if "The truth is what most people believe.  And they believe that which is repeated most often" then that means we have to repeat what we believe as often as we can with as many voices as we can find.

"No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heaven to the human spirit."
