I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the gospels in praise of intelligence.
-- Bertrand Russell

Which really should surprise no one, since intelligence, coupled with skepticism, is religion's undoing.

Dutch sayings are interesting.

I don't get the Monkey context.

Cat in the bag as I understand it had to do with sward fighting. Meaning that a cat was put in a bag for horsemen to kill.

Raining Cat's and Dogs, as I understand the origin was based on thatched roofs,

The following is wonderful: (Al draagt een aap een gouden ring, het is en blijft een lelijk ding)
Similar to the English expression “a pig in lipstick”; used to convey the message that superficial or cosmetic changes are futile at disguising the true nature of a person or thing.

“a pig in lipstick” is a wonderful saying.

I'd like to read sayings from other cultures that mean the same thing, or have other lessons.

The open library movement
in my opinion libraries and the internet should be part of the commons rather than for profit.

The FCC with https://www.fcc.gov/about/leadership/ajit-pai

and other things that should part of the commons are unfortunately being turned over to monopolies.

Is it because commoners don't want to pay taxes for basic services?

It's unbelievable how many people purchase bottled water when tap water is available.

Thanks Joan,
For some reason the reference was appropriate for a friend.
I sent him a paper copy of the book
"Too soon old, too late smart"
I'd like to read it too.
G/D it we need more libraries so books don't need to be sent through Amazon, or used on Kindle
The internet used to be an open library. I'm afraid much of that has been lost.

Chris, you remind me of an old Dutch saying:

"Too soon old, too late smart!

I don't know shit, but worked with a guy who was a  Rosicrucian.

There was a saying another guy I worked attributed to Aristotle:

The More You Know The More You Don't Know.

My friend followed it up with something such as Eventually I'll learn everything about nothing.

I'm sure other's know the full saying and reference.

Who is P.D. Ouspensky?

"When I see the Confederate flag, I see the attempt to raise an empire in slavery. It really, really is that simple. I don't understand how anybody with any sort of education on the Civil War can see anything else."

Ta-Nehisi Coates

Alan, I think the statements about those statues being history lessons, are just talking points by reactionaries.  Instead, there should be statues of Sojourner Truth, Booker T Washington, Shirley Chisolm, Barbara Jordan, Langston Hughes, WEB Dubois, Frederick Douglas, etc, and the Buffalo Soldiers, and more.  Those honor and inspire.
