Quotation Of The Day

A place to post quotations that inspired you, made your day better, or made you pause and think.

I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

Loren, with the names you've mentioned, you certainly are setting a standard.  Good for you!

Thanks, Carl. To be honest, I've wanted to go bigger with what NOFS has been doing to date. We've had Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor during previous fundraisers, and I want to keep the pattern of A-list guest speakers going.

Loren, what a great opportunity!

BTW, that should be FFRF, and NOT FRFF!  [grumble!]  FFRF is, of course, the Freedom From Religion Foundation and NOFS is its local chapter, the Northern Ohio Freethought Society.

Twenty-seven years after the first IPCC report, emissions this year will be 60% higher than in 1990; abject failure despite the wealth of knowledge we’ve accrued on both the problem and what we need to do about it.

Kevin Anderson

Great Bertrand Russell quote, Loren!

Chris, those wonderful Dutch saying take a bit of thinking. I guess US sayings take a bit of thinking as well. Great link!

I had the distinct honor and pleasure to introduce a most noted atheist at the FRFF / NOFS "Party in the Park" yesterday, and these are some of HIS works I used in his introduction:

Faith is an assertion of absolute conviction that is assumed without reason and is defended against all reason.

I believe what I do is a logical consequence of my understanding of the facts, and my position will obligately change according to my information.

If you can’t show it, you don’t know it.

Joan, Ouspensky was a Russian mathematician.

So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the gospels in praise of intelligence.
-- Bertrand Russell

Which really should surprise no one, since intelligence, coupled with skepticism, is religion's undoing.

Dutch sayings are interesting.

https://stuffdutchpeoplelike.com/2016/03/08/funny-dutch-expressions/

I don't get the Monkey context.

Cat in the bag as I understand it had to do with sward fighting. Meaning that a cat was put in a bag for horsemen to kill.

Raining Cat's and Dogs, as I understand the origin was based on thatched roofs,

The following is wonderful: (Al draagt een aap een gouden ring, het is en blijft een lelijk ding)
Similar to the English expression “a pig in lipstick”; used to convey the message that superficial or cosmetic changes are futile at disguising the true nature of a person or thing.

“a pig in lipstick” is a wonderful saying.

I'd like to read sayings from other cultures that mean the same thing, or have other lessons.
