Quotation Of The Day

A place to post quotations that inspired you, made your day better, or made you pause and think.

I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

Religion is the off switch of the human mind

Steve Pavlina

[from an entertaining article titled 10 Reasons You Should Never Have a Religion]

Comment by Loren Miller on August 23, 2017 at 7:06am

I regard monotheism as the greatest disaster ever to befall the human race. I see no good in Judaism, Christianity, or Islam -- good people, yes, but any religion based on a single, well, frenzied and virulent god, is not as useful to the human race as, say, Confucianism, which is not a religion but an ethical and educational system.
-- Gore Vidal

I very much like the distinction which Vidal brings to this statement, in separating people from the god and dogma some of them have created. And it is, indeed, a disaster, and one which will require a great deal of blood and treasure to get us shut of it.

We are all slaves to our histories. If there is to be a ... bright future, we must learn to break those chains.
-- Mimbari Ambassador Delenn, Babylon 5

Mira Furlan as Delenn brought a wonderful quality to that series, and never more so than with the above lines.

. . . you have likely come across more bullshit so far this week than a normal person living 1,000 years ago would in their entire lifetime.

Loren, I am in awe of your work and the effects you have had in your area and here at A/N. If I did 1/100th of what you do, I would be proud.

Thanks, also, for your support over the years; you are one of my pillars upon whom I stand.

Reminds me that with all the hoopla about the eclipse, there's a world full of natural wonders that we take for granted and are free to enjoy and marvel at every day.

Lilac, to answer your question, we're not getting the kind of spectacular turnouts you see at, say, The Amazing Meeting or FreeOK, but we do effectively fill the venue (Lions Park Lodge) which we've been using to date, and our books are still in the black after we're done paying the bills.

I would LOVE to do something here the size of a convention, but that would require a lot more scratch and time to put together, and it would likely have to have a far more regional reach to it.  I will say this, though: we did get one person who came from CHILE to see Aron!!!  No, I'm NOT kidding!

If men were the automatons that behaviorists claim they are, the behaviorist psychologists could not have invented the amazing nonsense called 'behaviorist psychology."  So they are wrong from scratch -- as clever and as wrong as phlogiston chemists.
-- Robert A. Heinlein, The Notebooks of Lazarus Long

Not sure I agree with this 100%, but it does put an interesting face on the whole concept of free will, don't it?
