I will be taking a reduced role at Atheist Nexus as of Oct 1, 2017.  I will not be moderating this group after that time, and I will be re-zeroing most of my groups and comments.

If there are quotations that you wish to save, I recommend that you save them now.

Since this is a popular group, I recommend that a member start up a new group for quotations, so that the members can continue adding and reading their favorite quotes.

Thanks and happy reading!

I received your letter of June 10th. I have never talked to a Jesuit priest in my life and I am astonished by the audacity to tell such lies about me. From the viewpoint of a Jesuit priest I am, of course, and have always been an atheist.
― Albert Einstein

Are you listening, Jorge Bergoglio?!?

Science has done more for the development of western civilization in one hundred years than Christianity did in eighteen hundred years.

"Our leaders have described the recent atrocity with the customary cliche: mindless cowardice. "Mindless" may be a suitable word for the vandalizing of a telephone box. It is not helpful for understanding what hit New York on September 11. Those people were not mindless and they were certainly not cowards. On the contrary, they had sufficiently effective minds braced with an insane courage, and it would pay us mightily to understand where that courage came from.

It came from religion."

Thanks, Alan, for the quote for 9/11 piece by Dawkins, it is timely.

Commenting on Prescott, it's also to have an ego the size of Mount Rushmore, while simultaneously having an understanding about as deep as a sidewalk puddle.

'"To profess to be doing God's will is a form of megalomania."

Joseph Prescott

A quote for 9/11, which was motivated by religion -- specifically, the fact that American soldiers were in Saudi Arabia, stationed on Muslims' stupid f'cking holy soil. We left quietly, three years later, but the "war on terror" continues, with new causes and provocations, in a never-ending cycle of vengeance and death.

This is a day for atheists to re-read (and Americans in general to read) Dawkins' "Religion's Misguided Missiles."

Religion is based on the idea that God is an imbecile.
-- Noam Chomsky

Not far off, Noam ... not far off at all!

Loren, your comment reminds me of Wm. Buckley's "I'd rather be governed by the firs 2000 names in the Manhattan phone book than by the faculty of Harvard."

"Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through or political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means 'My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'"

Isaac Asimov

Idaho Spud,

It was and is certainly been educational for me...

Comment by Joan Denoo on September 10, 2017 at 1:19pm

I agree, Spud, it provides stimulating ideas and provokes thought.
