What appears to be even worse about the Republican party in the current moment is that, largely because of the election of Donald Trump, they have abandoned any hint of their supposed principles of small, non-intrusive government and responsible spending Because They Won. They want to scrap any program or principle supported by Obama for little other reason than that he supported it. Trump remains silent on the issue of Roy Moore because Moore is one of their own, even with a beginning backlash from Senate Republicans. Any principles or morals which might have been cited in the past are being dismissed or ignored in favor of a My-Tribe-vs-Your-Tribe attitude ... Us versus Them.
There was a marvelous discussion on ABC News This Week today, wherein the round-table discussion largely agreed that recent events surrounding Moore and Al Franken and others involved in sexual harassment allegations have the potential to be a watershed moment, and that what it will really take to realize and solidify the watershed is for men and women to link arms and declare publicly that such behavior will no longer be tolerated. Women need to speak up for themselves, men need to speak up for women, AND men need to quit making apologies or defending other men who are guilty of such offenses.
There was some discussion that the correction needs to come from the top down. I disagree, especially since anyone who expects Trump to suddenly come to his senses regarding his own sexual chauvinism is fooling himself. Right now, especially with the #MeToo movement, the surge is coming from the bottom up, and it has considerable momentum working for it, possibly enough not only to foment investigations into not just Roy Moore or Al Franken, but the president, himself.
This is a push for sexual egalitarianism, and it's coming to a head, much as the gay rights movement found at least one such climax with Obergefell v Hodges. This desperately needs to be followed through on, for more reasons than can be counted, but chiefly to at least begin a genuine leveling of the sexual playing field and a disabusing of male privilege.
