"I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is."

Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B. (Order of Saint Benedictan), American Benedictine nun, theologian, author, and speaker.

Back in the days when we worked to get the right of women to have an abortion, Sister Chittister made it clear the difference between advocating for birth and advocating for a child's life span. If legislators truly believe in "pro-life" they provide funds for school lunches, and health care. "Pro-life" believers support  Planned Parenthood and contraception.

Agreed, pro-life is totally different from pro-birth. They always want to see the pregnancies go term, but once the baby is born, to hell with them.

Someplace I saw a wonderfully concise summation of true morality applied to pregnancy and birth:

Every mother a willing mother, every child a wanted child.

(And that doesn't mean forgoing sex when people don't intend to become parents! The advent of effective contraception was one of the triumphs of the 20th century.)

that's a beautiful one, GC!
