I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I've been an atheist and probably a good deal longer.  My admiration for those who enjoy reputations as wordsmiths extends even further back, whether we're talking about John F. Kennedy's assertion: "We choose to go to the moon," George Santayana's warning: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," or James T. Kirk's deft observation when faced with the dauntingly huge First Federation ship: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... poker!"

The realm of atheist activism has had its own share of verbal craftsmen and women, from Madalyn Murray O'Hair's: "An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church." to Aron Ra's succinct: "If you can't show it, you don't know it."

Regardless of the topic, these are words which are capable of fomenting inspiration, reflection, and sometimes even action.  They can educate and illuminate the human condition and allow us to better know ourselves.  That said, here is an open invitation to share those words which have been particularly meaningful or impactful or timely or just special to you for one reason or another.

Let's share those words and have fun!

I am quite capable of making my own meaning, & most people are if they'd only  realize it.

Following up Andy Borowitz's quote on the Republican Party (Lincoln to Palin to Trump, "no wonder they don't believe in evolution"):

"So apparently the party of Lincoln is now the party of John Wilkes Booth."

(EarlG at Democratic Underground, based on an observation by MohRokTah)

"The party of Lincoln has turned into the party of John Wilkes Booth."

(John SheirerMake Common Sense Common Again blog)

(Reactions to candidate Trump suggesting a "Second Amendment" solution last year to the prospect of Hillary Clinton nominating judges)

Idaho and Bertold, the word that comes to my mind is: "disturbing!"

Comment by Idaho Spud on October 24, 2017 at 3:13pm

Shocking is not the word I would use.  To me, it's almost unbelievable.

I personally believe that it’s shocking in the year 2017 that we can have American congressmen who openly proclaim the earth is 6,000 years old and that the fossil record was put there to test our faith. And because it’s a religious idea, not only are we not allowed to question or ridicule it, we are debating whether or not to teach it in our schools, and that’s upsetting to me. I really feel that religion does itself no favors by declaring itself immune from rational scrutiny.

There is something infantile in the presumption that somebody else has a responsibility to give your life meaning and point… The truly adult view, by contrast, is that our life is as meaningful, as full and as wonderful as we choose to make it.
― Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion

This is a point that I have made repeatedly: that we need to own our lives, take responsibility for what we do with them and not palm it off on a god which fails to evince itself.

Thomas, I think patriotism (at the risk of invoking No True Scotsman) is being supportive of the country and its principles and not necessarily whoever is RUNNING the country at the moment.  It's the kind of support which recognizes the importance of BOTH kinds of feedback, positive and negative.  The United States is supposed to be a nation of LAWS, not men, and the Constitution was structured in favor of freedom and personal expression and against the brand of top-down governance which dear Donnie seems to be trying to exercise.

As for being a liberal ... yeah, that one has gotten blurred almost past any recognition.  I'm a firm believer in individual rights, but also in individual responsibility.  I am NOT down with the Nanny State, but the need for regulation and oversight cannot be denied.  Some kind of balance has to be there, but that balance will require both sides of the aisle cooperating with each other to find.

The saddest part of what is going on right now is that we've become too focused on our differences and forgotten what we have in common.  That's not just problematic, it's downright dangerous.

I like that Mark Twain quote on patriotism too... although I am undecided ( or confused)  just what patriotism is. However, I detest the demand from religious conservatives for blind patriotism.

Joan,

Five or six years ago when we had a torrential snow storm here it caused massive black outs all over parts of eastern Maryland. Our house had no electricity for 10 days. Fortunately we did have a fireplace, my experience of living on the fringes, and lotsa love. Today my two boys saz that was their favorite, most memorable 10 days of Winter they had. They loved waking up in freezing butt cold bedroom, scrounging outside  for firewood, thawing frozen water, sponge baths in a dish tub, cooking dinners in the fireplace, playing family board games and other survival methods.

Nature can certainly bring a family closer together than had realized.

I don't think it is being hypocritical if you, an atheist, enjoy listening to religious music. I am a die hard rock n roll person, but I like listening to Willie Nelson and signing Christmas carols.... does that make me hypocritical? I don't think so. I don't reject all of my childhood up bringing and I actually do have some good sporadic Christmas memories.

Loren,

I am still confused about what being Liberal is. At one time I thought I did but things change or there is a deliberate attempt to confused or blur the lines between liberals and conservatives.

That Mark Twain comment is great! Thanks, Bertold.

Tom, you reminded me of the scene in Meaning of Life when the organ donation guys come after Terry Gilliam's liver--

But, I'm using it.

Don't muck us about!
