I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I've been an atheist and probably a good deal longer.  My admiration for those who enjoy reputations as wordsmiths extends even further back, whether we're talking about John F. Kennedy's assertion: "We choose to go to the moon," George Santayana's warning: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," or James T. Kirk's deft observation when faced with the dauntingly huge First Federation ship: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... poker!"

The realm of atheist activism has had its own share of verbal craftsmen and women, from Madalyn Murray O'Hair's: "An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church." to Aron Ra's succinct: "If you can't show it, you don't know it."

Regardless of the topic, these are words which are capable of fomenting inspiration, reflection, and sometimes even action.  They can educate and illuminate the human condition and allow us to better know ourselves.  That said, here is an open invitation to share those words which have been particularly meaningful or impactful or timely or just special to you for one reason or another.

Let's share those words and have fun!

Faith means not wanting to know what is true.
-- Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

This is about as succinct a statement regarding the determined ignorance I've seen represented in fundamentalist faith as I have ever heard.  When someone declares that if the bible said 2+2=5, they would try to accept it, that attitude goes so far beyond the pale that it borders on unbelievability ... yet there they are, they exist, and they are actively trying to convince others to join their belief.

And again I have to state: this is an attitude borne of FEAR, of god, of hell, and of their fellows' disapproval.  Lose that threat and a considerable portion of the persuasive power of that belief system falls of its own weight.

The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more.
― Ayaan Hirsi Ali

I love the blend of confidence and humility in Ayaan's statement. She looks at death clear-eyed and unafraid. She is determined to live every second of her life and not be sorry at the end.

I would rather be first in a little Iberian village than second in Rome.

That's a keeper, Patricia.

Loren, that's an excellent quote from "me".

I liked that one too, & I'm thinking it has to be a micro-mini salt shaker!

A real goodie, as well as being utterly true, Patricia.  Thanks for posting it.

Deny religion the ability to use shame, fear, or guilt, and you've basically eviscerated its ability to manipulate or control you … or anyone else.
-- me

For what I've heard, it's the catholic church which really is the master at using those goads to get the actions they desire, though granted, they are not alone. I would give real money to be present when someone, confronted with a church official trying threaten him or her in a particular direction, looked that official straight in the eye and said, "No ... FUCK YOU."
