I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I've been an atheist and probably a good deal longer.  My admiration for those who enjoy reputations as wordsmiths extends even further back, whether we're talking about John F. Kennedy's assertion: "We choose to go to the moon," George Santayana's warning: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," or James T. Kirk's deft observation when faced with the dauntingly huge First Federation ship: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... poker!"

The realm of atheist activism has had its own share of verbal craftsmen and women, from Madalyn Murray O'Hair's: "An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church." to Aron Ra's succinct: "If you can't show it, you don't know it."

Regardless of the topic, these are words which are capable of fomenting inspiration, reflection, and sometimes even action.  They can educate and illuminate the human condition and allow us to better know ourselves.  That said, here is an open invitation to share those words which have been particularly meaningful or impactful or timely or just special to you for one reason or another.

Let's share those words and have fun!

One bit of clerical business: please hold your quotes in the comment area below to 20 lines or 200 words.  One comment should not so dominate the Home page of this group that no other comment is visible.  That way, the briefer comments and quotes of all participants are more likely to be seen, read, and appreciated.  If you have a long quote or commentary, create a post, please.

God: The Sick Creation of Man

I have posted this before, but the more I read it, the more like a poem it becomes, and the more powerful. It was not designed as a poem, but works well as one. It is written by a friend of mine who posts adverts in different places, including this one:

than that God,

perfect in every way,

needing nothing,

knowing everything

past, future and even possible;

a loving, just, merciful and forgiving Father;

would summarily create,

from innocent nothingness,

creatures capable of suffering,

knowing in advance,

which of those he will consign

to suffer eternally —

as promised by Jesus!

No act of his creature-victims

could justify this verdict of unsurpassable hate,

injustice and endless mercilessness.

All in all, the very definition of unforgiving.

Nothing more is needed,

though volumes provide it,

to prove that such a God

is not and never was,

except as the sick

creation of

Religious moderation is the product of secular knowledge and scriptural ignorance.
― Sam Harris

OR ... it could also be the product of both secular and scriptural knowledge, with the accompanying understanding of the relative reliability of the first, compared to the utter unreliability of the second. Knowing how to evaluate and grant trust to your sources of information is critical ... and the ultimate form of "religious moderation" may well be said to be atheism!

Long story short, Patricia: faith is for suckers.

Tom, you were warned about bringing your BB v EU arguments here.  Your comment regarding that issue has been removed.  Do so again and you will be suspended from this group.

For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.
-- Carl Sagan

Living life based on what IS strikes me as a far better approach than based on what is NOT ... but maybe that's just me...

Box or cage, religion amounts to the same thing: the artificial imposition of an idea or meme which unnaturally restricts thought and action ... and there is nothing good that comes from that.
