I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I've been an atheist and probably a good deal longer.  My admiration for those who enjoy reputations as wordsmiths extends even further back, whether we're talking about John F. Kennedy's assertion: "We choose to go to the moon," George Santayana's warning: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," or James T. Kirk's deft observation when faced with the dauntingly huge First Federation ship: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... poker!"

The realm of atheist activism has had its own share of verbal craftsmen and women, from Madalyn Murray O'Hair's: "An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church." to Aron Ra's succinct: "If you can't show it, you don't know it."

Regardless of the topic, these are words which are capable of fomenting inspiration, reflection, and sometimes even action.  They can educate and illuminate the human condition and allow us to better know ourselves.  That said, here is an open invitation to share those words which have been particularly meaningful or impactful or timely or just special to you for one reason or another.

Let's share those words and have fun!

Nobody that has seen a baby born can believe in god for a second. When you see your child born, and the panic, and the amount of technology that is saving the life of the two people you love most in the world, when you see how much stainless steel and money it takes to fight off the fact that god wants both those people dead, no one, no one can look into the eyes of a newborn baby and say there's a god, because I'll tell ya, if we were squatting in the woods, the two people I love most would be dead. There's just no way around that. If I were in charge, no way. We need technology to fight against nature; nature so wants us dead. Nature is trying to kill us.

So, the universe is fine-tuned for life, eh? I wonder if anyone who has said that has considered the process of pregnancy and the number of obstacles placed between a fertilized ovum and its exit through the birth canal 40 weeks later. Even pregnancy is a gauntlet.

I think that's what a lot of us want: to matter to someone else, to be noticed and significant to them. Sadly, there are SOME people out there who don't just overdo it but insist that EVERYONE notice EVERYTHING they do. Anyone here know someone like that?!?

That guy seems to believe a whole lot of things, Joan.  Problem is, there's no substance behind his beliefs, but then that's faith for you.  All his statements amount to is a bunch of vacuous blathering that means exactly nothing.

'God Is Not Threatened by Our Scientific Adventures'


What if evidence of all living things descended from a common ancestor can not be reconciled with bible-believing christians?

What serves faith?

Scientists that are religious is a mystery to me as well.  The study of the sciences that my religion denied me for so many years, was the main reason I became an atheist.

@Loren, that 15% is a mystery to me that I cannot fathom. The first thing I do, as in Collin's case, is to regard his thinking irrelevant, even as I know he performed a remarkable task. But knowing how to count or organize DNA and reporting his findings has credibility with me, his philosophy does not. 

I could ask questions of Collins about DNA and trust his answers to be true, but not about philosophy.
