I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I've been an atheist and probably a good deal longer.  My admiration for those who enjoy reputations as wordsmiths extends even further back, whether we're talking about John F. Kennedy's assertion: "We choose to go to the moon," George Santayana's warning: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," or James T. Kirk's deft observation when faced with the dauntingly huge First Federation ship: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... poker!"

The realm of atheist activism has had its own share of verbal craftsmen and women, from Madalyn Murray O'Hair's: "An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church." to Aron Ra's succinct: "If you can't show it, you don't know it."

Regardless of the topic, these are words which are capable of fomenting inspiration, reflection, and sometimes even action.  They can educate and illuminate the human condition and allow us to better know ourselves.  That said, here is an open invitation to share those words which have been particularly meaningful or impactful or timely or just special to you for one reason or another.

Let's share those words and have fun!

One bit of clerical business: please hold your quotes in the comment area below to 20 lines or 200 words.  One comment should not so dominate the Home page of this group that no other comment is visible.  That way, the briefer comments and quotes of all participants are more likely to be seen, read, and appreciated.  If you have a long quote or commentary, create a post, please.

Wonderful quote of Arthur C. Clarke, Thanks Loren.

Says it all, really.

I embrace the quote of Matt Dillahunty, Loren! It describes exactly what holds people from the enlightenment of new knowledge. I would love to sit and talk with an intelligent person who continues to believe and have faith in the ancient stories of the brutal Homo sapiens evolution and them not getting emotional.

Discoveries happen when people go "off-book," and if weren't for people going off-book, we wouldn't have books of the new discoveries. If all we did was stick with the one book, then Thor would still be slinging lightning, the earth would be flat and fixed and circular, but it's the people who challenged those things that are in a book or went off and said, "Aaaah, I learned some stuff from books, and now I'm gonna go exploring." That's where the new books come from, and the fact that we happen to write it down in a book doesn't mean this is now true. It means this is what we understand, and we represent it. It's not true because it's in a book, and I don't think you think that, except for the one book.
-- Matt Dillahunty, to preacher Israel Rodriguez

Matt makes a very critical point here: that relying on authority and especially a static authority like a book means that No New Discoveries Get Made. It's when we get away from those fixed references and go off on our own that new phenomena can be unearthed and their characteristics may be revealed, analyzed, and better understood. The problem, of course, is that such discoveries are likely to have a tendency to upset or contradict those coming from the aforementioned book, and those who are dedicated to that book don't like that very much.

Joan, I've been impressed with that statement of Cory Booker ever since I first ran onto it in August of 2015.  It is that attitude which is essential in asserting and repairing the secular nature of our governments, at the local, state, and federal level, because they have been compromised by those who would insist on inserting their own religion into all of them.  I've had my own brush with State / Church separation and took action, because I thought it was necessary and because religion needs to understand that, while it may have a place in our culture, it has NONE in our government.

“Before you speak to me about your religion,
first, show it to me in how you treat other people;
before you tell me how much you love your God,
show me in how much you love all His children;
before you preach to me of your passion for your faith,
teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors.
In the end, I’m not as interested in what you have to tell or sell
as I am in how you choose to live and give.”

What the lamentably late Christopher Hitchens said about Jerry Falwell applies to Trump as well: "if you gave [him] an enema, he could be buried in a matchbox."

But Trump is not an outlier, but rather a symptom and a culmination:

"Watching Donald Trump’s rise, I’ve had a strange feeling. It’s not just that he’s applying shock politics to the most powerful and heavily armed nation on earth; it’s more than that. In books, documentary films and investigative reporting, I have documented a range of trends: the rise of superbrands, the expanding power of private wealth over the political system, the global imposition of neoliberalism, often using racism and fear of the “other” as a potent tool, the damaging impacts of corporate free trade, and the deep hold that climate change denial has taken on the right side of the political spectrum. And as I began to research Trump, he started to seem to me like Frankenstein’s monster, sewn together out of the body parts of all of these and many other dangerous trends."

America, the land where a 4 week old fetus is a person but a 5 year old Guatemalan child is not.
-- "Osiris Malkovich" of YouTube

This is the brand of ignominy which the Trump administration has brought to this country. The saddest part of this attitude is that it is found as much in those who support Trump as it is in the man himself and his policies, and they would see nothing wrong with the above quote .... if they bothered to read.
