I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I've been an atheist and probably a good deal longer.  My admiration for those who enjoy reputations as wordsmiths extends even further back, whether we're talking about John F. Kennedy's assertion: "We choose to go to the moon," George Santayana's warning: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," or James T. Kirk's deft observation when faced with the dauntingly huge First Federation ship: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... poker!"

The realm of atheist activism has had its own share of verbal craftsmen and women, from Madalyn Murray O'Hair's: "An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church." to Aron Ra's succinct: "If you can't show it, you don't know it."

Regardless of the topic, these are words which are capable of fomenting inspiration, reflection, and sometimes even action.  They can educate and illuminate the human condition and allow us to better know ourselves.  That said, here is an open invitation to share those words which have been particularly meaningful or impactful or timely or just special to you for one reason or another.

Let's share those words and have fun!

One bit of clerical business: please hold your quotes in the comment area below to 20 lines or 200 words.  One comment should not so dominate the Home page of this group that no other comment is visible.  That way, the briefer comments and quotes of all participants are more likely to be seen, read, and appreciated.  If you have a long quote or commentary, create a post, please.

Hope ain't a tactic, Don.
-- Chief Engineering Tech Mike Williams, to BP rep Don Vidrine, Deepwater Horizon

Back in my college days, my Psychology of Personality professor once opined that: "Hope is a liar." I agreed with him then and four-plus decades haven't changed my attitude. Hope without action is impotent and useless.  And I can't help but notice that all the hope on this planet hasn't brought Jesus back or changed the status of any of those hoping for his return and/or better times.  A person can either ACT to improve that status or nothing happens.

The idea that things must have a beginning is really due to the poverty of our imagination.
-- Bertrand Russell, Why I Am Not a Christian

Ah, but evangelical Christians are notorious for trying to suppress imagination, in themselves and in their kids, and their fascination with the Kalam Cosmological Argument approaches obsessiveness. Think outside the box, anyone?

Something is fundamentally wrong with an organization which has to use coercion and force rather than argument and evidence to maintain its control.
-- me, on the Catholic Church

The scary thing is: the same can be said of any Dominionist organization, and too many evangelical / fundamentalist churches. You can throw Islam in there, too. I won't mind.

What are 26 bishops doing in our legislature, making us the only democracy with a theocratic element? True, the men in frocks don’t look out of place in the whole creaking edifice of the House of Lords. But the high number of religious members of both houses is wildly out of kilter with the wider population.
-- Polly Toynbee, columnist, The Guardian

And this is in a country which is at least ostensibly FAR more secular than the US is, yet they maintain this old and antiquated tradition, apparently purely out of force of habit. At least we're not the only screwy ones out there!

You don't have the right to hold somebody accountable for standards you refuse to apply to yourself.
-- Stephen A. Smith

Sound familiar? Sure does to me. You listening, GOP???

I am in total agreement with AOC's statement, Joan.  Complicity with Trump and his corruption will carry a price tag, and a HIGH one at that.  My guess is that most of the Republicans in the Senate and House won't be able to meet that price.

Thing is, that will set off another series of problems, not as serious as Trump, but serious enough.

"I want to see every Republican go on the record and knowingly vote against impeachment of this president, knowing his corruption, having it on the record so that they can have that stain on their careers for the rest of their lives. ~ Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

My husband went to pay a bill for the yearly furnace maintenance, & when he got into the office, the whole staff was praying. He was royally glared at for interrupting. We deal with a different company now.
