"Widespread rejection in America of climate science, and denial of climate change is linked with the "street fight" over evolution, speakers told an audience of mostly American scientists and educators.
But Miller said the stereotype that "rational science is at war with irrational faith" is wrong.
He said popular American culture and religious speakers promote a literal interpretation of the Bible, as well as the idea that morality would not exist without religion."

ha! okay...

United States placed second to last — just before Turkey — in a recent survey in 33 countries of how well people understood evolution.

It is not just women whose rights are threatened by the Jesus freaks, so are the rights of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics, and the sexual minorities.  Wait till you have to endure a day in the stocks when you do not honor the Sabbath.

BCC debate (below)

Of 204 people that voted
37.3% said they thought religion was good for society.
46.1% said they thought religion was bad for society.
9.3% said they were undecided.
7.3% answered miscellaneously (aka did not answer the question). 4 of these votes said only Christian religion was good for society. The question was not Christ-centric, it was asking about religion in general.

At the risk of sounding self serving, The Religion Virus has a fairly detailed introduction to memetics, and you get double value because it focuses on religion-as-memes to show how and why religion evolved to its present state.

Thanks for the link to your blog, Ruth.  I'm hoping it will explain memetics to me, since I really don't understand the concept.  I'll have to ask my son, who has a wonderful grasp of the topic, to help me understand, as well :)

Please note that my blog "Poo Fools (us all)" is in defense of memetics. I'd appreciate input from people, such as yourselves, who understand memetics. It would also be nice, if you "liked" it, helping to bring memetics discourse to the attention of the general AN membership. Thanks!

I'm getting tired of explaining memetics to folks who have never heard of it. This symbol comes in handy.
