Welcome science fiction & fantasy fans!

As a science fiction/fantasy writer myself, I enjoy taking voyages into the unknown. Looking at the universe as it isn't often helps us put the real world into perspective. It's also fun to take an occasional vacation from the often-harsh reality around us. Unlike the theists, the religionists, the god-groupies who feel compelled to live in fantasy realms, we visit them and then come back home--and then go voyaging again.

I hope you'll all feel free to congregate here and compare your experiences in other worlds and times.

On Dec 11 I'll be doing an Ask-Me-Anything session at http://reddit.com/r/sciencefiction, sort of like an online sf convention. Of course, you're all invited. Reddit memberships are free, so I hope people will participate.

I'm still playing with book jackets on Cheezburger.  My latest:

TO SAIL BEYOND THE SUNSET Robert A. Heinlein

Ruth, here's a link to JeffCatsBookClub...hidden in teh lie-berry at Cheez-town:

You kind of have to explore the different departments under FAVORITES.  I still haven't figured out WTF Ben Huh is doing with the entire site.  It's too effing complicated for me these days.

Ruth, I have a lot of peeves with the credibility of Sci-fi, but haven't noticed that one.  I probably will now though.

I know I'm late to the party, but totally seconded the comments and graphics about Robert Heinlein.  He was AND IS my favorite author.

Ruth, that's just one reason it's called "Sci-Fi" (pronounced "skiffy"), rather than Science Fiction or SF.

When Forry Ackerman invented "Sci-Fi" in the 1950s...when High Fidelity sound systems were called Hi-Fi, most  science fiction writers and readers groaned, and put it in the same category as the n-word.. And some of us still do.

This is one of my pet peeves with sci-fi credibility. All of these programs where civilization collapsed two years ago, or ten, the lawns are mowed, streets are swept and their margins trimmed. I sit there complaining out loud to the TV during such scenes.

I know what you mean. I wrote him a fan letter in the early '70s and was totally shocked when he answered it himself!  (Well it was more about skating and cats than about SF...not really fanish.  My favorite book was/is The Door Into Summer.)  I stayed in touch both of them via Ginny, and we were both still exchanging emails and cat pix till a few months before she died.

They were incredibly kind, gracious people.
