Sex for fun and non-procreation!

In this world, we can't get away from religion. We've been exposed to false information regarding contraception failure rates and experienced the STD scare tactics. Some of us may even have gone through abstinence-only sex education!

Here in Secular Sexuality we will discuss:

-sexual health in light of peer-reviewed science
-safe for work guides on safe(r) sex (or links)
-questions that would shock the religious

I like the pizza metaphor, but do I have to stop saying pizza's number one purpose is to burn peoples' mouths?

Good TED talk.  Something I never thought about before.  Pizza metaphor does sound much better.

Al Vernacchio's TED talk about a positive, inclusive, communicative, delicious metaphor for sexuality is a very worthwhile eight minutes!

In the US sex is often compared to "first base", "scoring", etc., a competition with strict rules, only for the skilled and fit, with winners and losers. We can do better! "Baseball, yer out!" Let's talk about... pizza.

"Sex needs a new metaphor. Here's one..." (video)

(Thanks to Joan Denoo for sharing that in "LGBTQI atheists, nontheists, and friends".)

A good complementary article elaborating on these concepts: "To Slide or to Slice? Finding a positive sexual metaphor" by Carly Dreyfus.

A great podcast!

An interesting note about the variations possible among cultures, about 31 minutes into the show, in response to a question about how often men and women think about sex:

"In the Mangaian culture in the South Pacific, women are voracious. And the rule of that particular culture, that's been there for hundreds of years, long before Western contact came to that particular island, the rule was, a girl could have as many boyfriends as she wants, there's hardly any taboos around sexuality there, even for young kids to have sex anytime they want, but ... the rule was, the boy was expected to give the girl at least three orgasms for every one orgasm that he has."

Sounds sex-positive to me!

Dr. Ray next mentioned the Na culture in China [on the border with Tibet], whose traditional "visiting marriage" system had no husbands as we know them. Siblings stay together through adulthood, men visit their lovers at night, and the uncles are the primary male figures in the children's lives.

(But see also: The Na of Southwest China: Debunking the Myths. While "visiting marriage", in which fathers do have specific roles from time to time, is the preferred type of partnership, others exist as well. Significantly, "notions of exclusivity are not entrenched, and the Na language has no word for 'jealousy'.")

I was on The Thinking Atheist last night. We really got into things like how to talk to your children about sex and the bogus notion of sex or porn addiction. If you or someone you know, believes in sex addiction, listen here. It is only a figment of the Christian imagination and their sex crazed guilt.
