In 1875, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was established in New York City. Child protection tracks it’s beginning in 1899 when the American Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals gave child protection support for state legislation to protect children.

Federal support for The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (Public Law 93-247) CAPTA, initially enacted in 1974:

To identify the Federal role in supporting research, evaluation, technical assistance, and data collection activities;

To establish the Office on Child Abuse and Neglect;

To mandate the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information;

To set forth a minimum definition of child abuse and neglect;

To provide federal funds to States to support prevention, assessment, investigation, prosecution, and treatment activities;

To provide grants to public agencies and nonprofit organization for demonstration programs and projects;
