Not to beat a dead horse, but...

I watched 3 of 4 Cubs' games over the past 4 days. They scored a total of 4 runs--TOTAL! One run in each game (all home runs). Somehow, they won 2 games, shutting out Pittsburgh 1-0 in each.

It happened again (see last post)! ESPN had the Cubs/Nationals game on last night. For 8 &1/2 innings, I suffered through no runs, only 3 hits. Cubs were losing 3-0, bottom of the ninth. So, I went outdoors to look for meteors (Perseid shower--didn't see any, as usual) for 10 minutes. The minute I walked back inside, the Cubs batter was rounding third base jumping up and down. He had just hit a grand slam "walk-off" homerun! Cubs won 4-3, and I missed it! Truly amazing. I am a jinx, no doubt about it!

I'm not superstitious, but I sometimes wonder. It seems that whenever I watch the Chicago Cubs on TV, they lose. When not on, they win. Really! I watched last night and they lost 9-0 with only 3 hits. Not much fun. This happens ALL the time. Well, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but I bet it's the majority.

I'm responsible for them winning the World Series (2016). Yep, no doubt about it. You see, I was watching the 7th game through 6 innings when I had to drive over an hour to the airport to pick up my daughter. By the time we got back, the game was over and the Cubs won. If I'd been home to watch, they would have lost. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Life is full of disappointments, with or without a god. I happened upon the end of a baseball game where the pitcher was tossing a no-hitter. Ninth inning, two outs, two strikes, and there was a hard hit single. The fans were all stunned. I wonder whose side god was on?!  (And boy do I hate it when they point to the sky.)

PBS aired a "Masters" show on "The Greatest Hitter Ever", Ted Williams, last night. He was one of my heroes growing up (me, not him). Few people knew that his mother was Mexican, which he kept a secret. He had his issues over the years--bad temper, poor father and husband, etc., but, oh my, what a good batter he was.

The ESPYS (sports award show last night) was pathetic--what little I watched. Every other award winner "thanked god" (sickening). Every time I flipped over to watch it, there was a commercial or something "maudlin" to touch our hearts. Yuck. I'm getting to be quite the cynic.

I watched a little Wimbledon tennis yesterday, but had to mute the telly during a match between two women (Sharapova being one of them). With EVERY swing, both girls screamed as loud as they could. It was so obnoxious. How could any observer stand listening to that for an hour or so?

By the way, I attended Wimbledon 50 years ago while biking through England (and Europe).

Now a word about World Cup soccer: BORING! Not much more to say about it. And all that noise in the background! Those incessant horns. Nope. Not gonna watch or listen to any more soccer.

Watching much of the US Open this weekend. Observations: the course is unfair. Good shots go unrewarded--even punished. Phil Michelson is human and makes bad decisions (hitting a ball in motion). Fans are obnoxious--mostly young men--the ones that holler "Go in the hole" after every shot, or just plain yell something stupid out that can be heard by all viewers (like "dilly dilly").  Not much I can do about any of that.

I must admit, Loren, I've never been to Cleveland--and I'm only about 200 miles away, if that! Growing up in South Bend, most of my loyalties were to Chicago, although my second favorite baseball team was the Indians.

I'm empathetic to your feelings. It's tough following losers all one's life (think Cubs). But yes, you should be proud of Cleveland for all the reasons you listed, and more. I live 50 miles from Indianapolis and should take more interest in it, but I don't.
