SWiFT members, do you think Jesus was a historical person?

I'm not sure this question is of broad interest to SWiFT members, but as an ex-Catholic, I can't help wondering and would love to know what others think.I raise the question of Jesus' historical…Continue

Why are tax breaks given to the religious? Seriously, I'm really asking...

I have a basic understanding of the separation of church and state, and I am a huge advocate.  It's why I joined ffrf.  I think people should be free to be religious or not.  I get why church/state…Continue

I wanted to discuss the anti-rational aspects of Christianity.  Why haven't fundamentalists and creationists gone away in modern society?  I am always amazed and discouraged by the amount of people…Continue

An interesting starting point may be a chapter out of "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins:  "The Roots of Morality: Why are We Good?" . Dawkins would argue that morality predates religion.  If you haven't read his discussion about this subject, I highly recommend it.

Kurt, I just got my copy of Freethought today from FFRF, and you were in it!

That would be so awesome to stand up to the village, church, and all the other deluded people there, and demand that the polling center be changed the way you did.

GREAT JOB!

Kurt,

I applaud you for taking a stand! I also just saw your case written up in the most recent ffrf newspaper. Well done!

On a lighter note, I do have to say that is the silliest looking picture of Jesus I have ever seen displayed in a church or Christian school. I’ve seen funnier, but only on the web!

We were a few miles away at the parade in Freistadt near Mequon... German roots.  They had excellent home-made bread and Sprecher Root Beer.  And lots of Lutherans (like my parents)!  I think the parade is sponsored by the Trinity Lutheran Church so THAT was probably why it had the feel of a church picnic!

Your daughter's bomb pop bike sounds great... there's a guy in the Janesville area that collects antique bikes and he had a great lecture & slide show a few years back at the Rock Trail Coalition meeting.  Those bikes with chrome always catch my eye....modeled after motorcycles and all decked out.

I haven't been to a 4th of July parade in a long time... I had forgotten how many religious references take place at these sorts of ceremonies...silly me.  Can I just be a patriot with a small 'p' instead of a "PATRIOT"?   I'm grateful to live in America but it sure seems like God and Country go hand in hand. My daughter made the comment: I bet we're the only athiests here!

Mojo. Bummer. "not available for streaming". Hey, did you ever see the Nova program "Intelligent Design on Trial"? That's what got me more involved in atheism.

Wednesday night on NOVA there's a repeat broadcast of "Musical Minds".  I highly recommend it.  It has some of the work of Oliver Sacks featured, if I remember correctly.  It's fascinating how human brains that may be considered 'defective' on some measures are 'genius' when it comes to musical talent and musical 'intelligence'.
