Hurray! My power is back on. Evidently, a storm knocked a tree down on a power line just down the road from me overnight. So, I was without electricity for about 9 hours. That meant no coffee! Ugh.

So, I went for a walk (6 miles). I had to wade through lots of water that had ponded on the road. We got over two inches of rain in 12 hours. The ground is already super saturated. Farmers have absolutely nothing planted yet this year. It's really crunch time. My farming SIL is pulling his hair out. He may lose his (my) $50,000 hemp seed investment.

Grinning Cat, is this the one to which you refer?

Why is it, "Bach's Coffee Cantata is early in the morning music while Mozart's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" is not?

By the way, thank you for the tip on how to say it in German, "It's a little night music."

Oh! I get it. Thanks

Plinius, I didn't realize you supplied a link and I searched for Bach's Kaffee Kantate. I like the version you supplied better than what I found. Thanks!

Reminds me of one criterion for whether something is "early music": whether or not it's intended to be listened to early in the morning. Thus Bach's Coffee Cantata is early music while Mozart's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" is not.

(A mnemonic for the latter from Josefa Heifetz's From Bach to Verse:

ne klei-
ne Nachtmusik das ist.
ten by
Herr Mozart, not by Lizst.")

Makes me think of Bach's Kaffee Kantate:

Kaffee! Kaffee! Kaffee muss Ich ha-a-aben!

So perhaps many churches' practice of a coffee hour after services is a nod to reality! :)

A Unitarian Universalist minister wrote alternate words to the hymn tune "Holy, Holy, Holy":

Coffee, coffee, coffee,
Praise the strength of coffee.
Early in the morn we rise with thoughts of only thee.
Served fresh or reheated,
Dark by thee defeated,
Brewed black by perk or drip or instantly.

(The other two verses are more specific to UUs:)

Though all else we scoff we
Come to church for coffee;
If we're late to congregate, we come in time for thee.
Coffee our one ritual,
Drinking it habitual,
Brewed black by perk or drip or instantly.

Coffee the communion
Of our Uni-Union,
Symbol of our sacred ground, our one necessity.
Feel the holy power
At our coffee hour,
Brewed black by perk or drip or instantly.

(From Christopher G. Raible's Hymns for the Cerebration of Strife: freely translated from a well-known Unitarian Universalist publication of similar title)
