Susan Blackmore's Memes lecture is great, really like "temes" idea as well; have not heard that term before. Kind of charges my imaginations.
Please note my blog, "Poo Fools (us all)," is a defense of memetics.
This LOLcat reminds me of our relationship to memeplexes. "I has memes... No wait, memes has me!"
In particular, it reminds me of Dominator culture memes. Riane Eisler, in The Chalice and the Blade, describes two strange attractors of human culture Dominator And Partnership. Dominator culture memes exploit our instincts for dominance and submission. Dominator culture is hierarchial, with violence used to maintain the hierarchy. Partnership is equality/cooperation based. Ever since weapons technology such as that of the ancient Greeks and Huns, Dominator culture has had the edge. It was more cost effective to take by force than to make or grow, because somebody could just take the products of your labor. We have Dominator culture worldwide. The problem is, taking assumes an environment of natural abundance. As we keep taking and taking from the earth, we reach natural limits such as Climate Destabilization. Dominator culture is a local optimum, not a global optimum, not once you exceed your home planet's carrying capacity.
It came to me that a similar dilemma must face all emerging civilizations, some analog of their gene/meme coevolution having a Dominator/Partnership dimension. This should be included in the Drake Equation. In other words, memetics can't be ignored when we calculate the probabilities of alien contact.
Memetics also can't be ignored when we calculate our own chances of surviving to reach the stars.
Have you seem Susan Blackmore's Memes and Temes lecture? It blew my mind.
